Why would my 1.6 be so heavy on fuel at the moment?

i do have a hole in the exhaust, is there anything else i could check which effects the fuel consumption e.g. plugs?

It's starting to get annoying, i even tried a Ecotek valve to improve the fuel econemy.

are these fitted to the exhaust? what am i looking for, to make sure it's connected and not too dirty?

My mate's girlfriend had the same problem recently. She bought a tidy 1.6 megane and was getting 40+ mpg but after a couple of months she started only getting 25+ mpg. They realised it was because it wasn't getting a run, she was taking the kids to school then coming home, going shopping then coming home etc. Basically the engine wasn't even getting warm by the time she'd switched it off and it was the short trips that where causeing the low mpg. They put a really good petrol treatment in it and took it for a long trip to Plymouth and ever since its been back to doing 40+ mpg.

Coolant temp sensor, plugs, leads 02 Sensor could always cause problems directly relating to fuel consumption.

The hole in the exhaust is not going to help either, especially if it's pre-02 sensor.

If you're only doing short journeys in it, your MPG will go up as the car will be running on choke/warm-up map.

what kind of treatment did they use, is it worth giving this a try?

I do a reasonable amount of miles in it, hardly do any short trips like work is a 25 min drive if the words were completly clear.

i'll try plugs and leads as they are cheap and probably due for a change.

The hole in the exhaust is right near the rear box.

nope not really any short journeys.

I've heard a lot of good things about this and for just over a £5 it's got to be worth a shot.
