My cars having a new water pump fitted and they are going to have the belt covers off. The cars at 80000 miles and had the belt changed at 60000 miles. As they are going to be able to reach the cam belt they asked if i wanted it changed??

Any thoughts?? I'm happy to do it if its worth it but don't want to throw to much money at this problem its gone into the garage for.

If the belt has been changed while you have owned it then there isnt much point. However, if you bought and the previous owner stated it had been changed then I would do it anyway for piece of mind.

Whenever I buy a car I change the cam belt even if the seller said it had been changed. But thats just me.

20,000 miles and how many years ?

I think I'd probably do it, you've got most of the stuff off to complete it at that point anyway.

I agree here......

.....as the front end is being removed anyway, the actual price of the belt is tiny so you may as well have it done.

Also, make sure your mechanic replaces the 2 small hoses at the front of the engine - they WILL go within a couple of months os having the watr pump replaced and you'll have all the hassle of getting the front end of the engine removed again!

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Id say do the belt, i did my water pump but wasnt brave enough to do the cam belt, i got a qualified mate to do it 12 months after i did the pump.

Bear in mind that if your doing the belt its worth doing the tensioner bearings too as they tend to be the bits that will wear then get play then potentialy damage the belt.

A kit should set you back about £150 and will be the belt, 2 idlers and 1 tensioner bearing, but should your tensioner unit be had it you will need to go see nelson maindealer im not sure of the price of that though.

if your removing the tensioner its always worth replacing although £110 a pop its worth it for peace of mind IMO

Just spoke to the garage again, recons about £200-£300 for the cam belt change. Also thinks the warrenty company will only give me 3 or so hours labour towards the water pump. Looks like a stern phonecall to the warrenty company and a sting in my wallet. Ive only done 800 miles in the car and i took it back the day after getting it with a water leak

Its the same labour to change pump as it is to change belt (he may not actually even realise this yet). You have to remove all the same parts to get to them both (Rad, fan, camcovers..etc).

Nissan belt is between £30-£60 depending on where you buy from.

i done the whole lot on mine when the water pump went. courtesy nissan do a complete kit with belts, tensioner, idlers, seals VVT springs etc. expensive but worth it IMO.

hi mate, my water pump has a leak too, this i realised when i was fitting my brembos last week, so i figured while i'm at it, do the full 120k service! (although my car has only just gone over 50k miles...) why not eh? a lot of the front will be stripped away while doing the pump and then i wont have to worry about major servicing for years i hope.
