Ok, summer has arrived and the air con has disappeared. Well it still works but it's not cold enough to cope with a hot sun and black interior.

Ours is a Jap import which had the R12 gas originally fitted (not sure if UK cars are similar). The previous owners have had this recharged with drop-in replacement gas rather than changing the connectors and seals to be compatible with R134a.

Problem is, I can't find anyone in the area who can top it up with the replacement gas. Any suggestions for suitable people on the south coast?

Hey Ian,

Had mine done a couple of months ago by a mobile guy who did an excellent job.

Can't remember his details but I have them at home. I'll let you have them later.

Don't forget, reference recent thread, Kwik-Fit do a recharge for £44.95 nationwide.

They did my "Z" (Zafira :D ) and got the temp down to a rather chilly 6 degrees. :D (It had been a very warm 20 degrees)

They cant' do the ZX tho' as the connection points are different to modern cars. :(

But I have found someone local who will evacuate the old R12 gas, pressure check the system and refill with a drop-in replacement along with all necessary lubricants etc - all for £80 :D

some1 on the forum has in there sig... 'if you need your a/c regassing, im your man'... cant remember who though lol!

Ozzx - but he's in Sunderland

Are you going to spill the beans or are you on commission? :)

As mentioned, Kwikfit won't touch it unless it has been converted to R134a connectors.

details of a company we use that can supply a conversion kit. have got it on my zed & makes it far easier to recharge with R134a for a small outlay on the kit

Did you fit it yourself or get someone to fit it? Bit worried about scare stories about eyeballs freezing when handling refrigerant! :wack:

Nobody will touch it while it is still gassed with the drop-in replacement. Unless it suddenly develops a serious leak and drains all the refrigerant of course!

Looks like I'll need to change it to accept R134a unless I can find a place which can recharge the drop-in replacement (within 100 miles!)

Cheers for the help,

Ian A.

:headvswal :headvswal B*gger! :headvswal :headvswal

Forgot to look - promise to look tonight. Had my head full of brakes the last couple of days - pads discs and 1 caliper are shot on the family Mondeo. Doing it myself and saving £250 BUT I've also had my mate and his Mrs over from Spain, so been a bit busy!

I'll let you know later.

Cheers,

Matt

fitted it myself, but then i work in a garage with A/C recharging equipment! :D

you could supply the kit to whoever does the regas, its only a case of changing the valves & putting some oil in the system :)

Finally found time to look this up :slap:

It's A1 Air-Con. The guy's name is Mick Horgan and he charged me £60 to recharge my 1994 import, which already had R134a in it. He's mobile but seemed thorough and to know what he was doing. My air con works perfect now. Shame the weather is so sh*te. I think I talked to him about the R12 conversion in passing and he said he could do it, but I can't be sure! His number is 01425 610111 0r 07836 227766.

Hope this helps!

How do yo know it had R134a in it already?

How do yo know it had R134a in it already?

Er.......there was a nice sticker on the slam panel with R134a on it, so I just kind of assumed that was what was in it......................

A sticker eh. Fook me, that seems way too simple LOL.

I'll have to look at mine.

Does this mean ye olde Kwik Fit can do it, if it is R134a?

How do yo know it had R134a in it already?

if it has it will have larger quick clamp style connectors insteat of the smaller screw type ones ;)
