Been trying to book up a hotel in Malibu and Santa Monica at the end of the summer and came across a website I forgot about.

I stayed in the WORST hotel I've ever stayed in in Southampton called 'The Star'...my review appeared after reading some other reviewed in other parts of the world.

Review is here... http://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g186299-d193834-r6777525-Star_Hotel-Southampton_Hampshire_England.html

There are some other amusing reviews for the same hotel.

Have done a fair bit of traveling in my time and over all, it has to be said that in general, UK hotel accommodation is stupidly over priced and of a pretty poor standard for a country with the wealth the UK has. A few people I know mirror those thoughts. Go to decent parts of Europe, the US and most are of a higher standard at a greatly reduced cost.

Anyone ever stayed in 'The Star' in Southampton?

I bet they even had a spanish maitre'd called Manuel didn't they?

No, they had no maitre'd as such, instead, they had some miserable 85 year old pensioner serving breakfast, which, was a curled up bit of scrambled egg on the corner of a hotplate, some shriveled/dried up tomatoes that looked more akin to women's breasts from 3rd world documentaries, beans were all dry and about 4 left. I had some toast which was ok...you can't really go wrong with toast though.

Not sure if anyone remembers the episode on “Some Mothers do ‘ave ‘em” where Frank and Betty go on their second honeymoon. They stay at a really vile mankey old hotel run by a Mr. Bedford. Well, it was something similar to that.

That just shows how poor the UK is for traveling, a double room for the night £55 is an outrage if you take your life into your own hands.

I stayed at the Sheriton Towers in Singapore for £55 a night for a double room with en suit, emporer size bed with Egyptian cotton sheets the lot, and thats a 5 star with a butler on each floor and a dude in colonial dress who opens doors and calls you Sir.

I can certainly concur those sentiments.

I've just been to Kuala Lumpur and Bali. In KL we stayed at a 5-star hotel overlooking the city park and Petronas Twin Towers. Massive room up on the 26th floor, executive luxuries such as whirlpool bath, 42 inch plasma, broadband in-room, etc. Breakfast was included and comprised of the biggest international buffet I've ever seen (even bigger than in Vegas) - had everything from continental and ommelets to sushi and Congi (Japanese). All this for the princely sum of £42 PER NIGHT! That is including all taxes, etc.

In Bali we stayed at another 5-star hotel. We had a private bungalow with four poster bed, private veranda overlooking the beach and another whilpool bath and choice of no less than 6 restaurants to eat in (all serving various types of breakfast as well). Again, only £45 PER NIGHT!

In contrast, I just booked a room at a hotel in Northampton (for the Billing weekend) and it is costing me an amazing £60 per night - breakfast not included ...

This country is rubbish - why am I here again?

I think maybe it's not a fair judgement to compare prices from developing nations to developed nations, but understand where you're coming from.

You pay a huge premium over here and get shit all in return. Even the cheapy holiday-Inn express things are about £100 a night! £100 a night!!?? You can stay in a hotel in Malibu for that price! Or even closer to home in continental Europe, you'd get a very very nice hotel, not some rep infested rabbit hutch in Milton Keynes.

So do I! And I came here by way of Washington DC, Hong Kong and Marbella! What was I thinking?

Oh yeah, my wife is British and lives here so I was probably thinking with the wrong "head" ;) Probably not the last time I'll make that mistake ...

We've been seriously thinking about moving ... Dubai is very high on our list at the moment ...

the face value and its presented worth of anything in this country is not a proper representation of its true value or true worth

That is true, and locals probably could not afford to stay at the places we can, but when you get a flea pit costing the same as a nice clean hotel in the same town, what kind of judgements will people make.
