I got a copy of this sick mail on Saturday as well. Luckily I deleted it via a WAP phone so it never got as far as my PC.

The police actually do spend some time on this but the resources that the group get are pitiful. I had the misfortune to work on a paedophile investigation with the team at Scotland Yard and I couldn't believe the crap facilities and equipment they had available. As a thank you the company for which I work actually donated them some computing equipment afterwards ! It's a bit gutting when you see how much they spend on speed cameras etc ... frown.gif

Like many, I get loads of spam every day and delete it. I also got this link and deleted like the rest before thinking that I should have done something about it, like report it to the ISP etc. Thank heavens some of you are more on the ball, hope your actions gets this off the web ASAP. As Macca say's, how did they get our e-mails? some of the mail address's will be known by very few people!

I think I will change ISP in the near future and hopefully not get any more of this crap.

i got 3 yesterday, that one is mild compared to the other 2, i deleted them.

There is a lesson to be learnt for nearly everyone here I think. If you have your email address 'on display' like it is in this forum then it is a simple matter for these to be harvested by certain programs. If in your profile you add something like ".nospam" to the end of the address then this will stop happening. The only thing is that when people send you email using the link they will need to edit the address each time. You see people do this a lot in newsgroups, which are routinely harvested for valid addresses.

Andy, the email address is not actually 'on display' on the forum as it is on some other types. The email is accessed via another link, which uses the username as a key.

To harvest the forum you would need to :-

a) grab hundreds of threads, grab username or email link, follow the link, grab the email address out of that page.

or

b) run the email link with an auto incrementing username field from 1 to ?? characters, probably case sensitive.

The method used is a valid anti spam measure, although not allowing the address to be accessed at all is more secure.

Everyone can stop their addressbeing displayed publicly from within their profile.

Adding .nospam to your address is no longer a very reliable method, as it has been in use for so long now, that to search/replace such an obvious pattern is a standard thing for a harvester script.

Much better would be to change something less obvious to a script, but very obvious to the eye, like switching the .co. portion to .oc. or .com to .ocm

Copy of e-mail received today following my reporting this to the child protection agency.

Subject: FAO Jeff Turner- Internet spamming

Dear Mr. Turner,

your message below has been passed by public enquiries to me. I am copying

this reply to the Internet Watch Foundation, who are able to investigate

sites referred to them and to refer any containing illegal content to the

relevant authorities. In this case I suspect the site will already have been

referred, but as it is apparently based in Russia there may be little that

can be done about the site itself. Should you get further unsolicited mail

which seems to contain illegal material, you can refer the site directly to

the IWF using the address I have used.

The issue of SPAM containing illegal material is one of which we are aware,

but I am afraid there are no easy solutions, again due to the international

nature of the internet. But there is advice available on dealing with SPAM.

A good site to look at is: http://www.getnetwise.org/tools where you will

find details of the various types of software, some of which can be

downloaded for free. If you click on the "Tools for Families" icon, you can

fill in a questionnaire designed to help identify the most suitable software

for your needs: I realise that in a business setting this may be less

helpful, but it is nevertheless worth a look if you are not already familiar

with it.

More information on Spam is available at the UK Internet Service Providers

Association (ISPA) website at http://www.ispa.org.uk/html/consumer_spam.htm

.

We would suggest you do not use the facility seemingly provided to attempt

to unsubscribe. A spammer is unlikely to unsubscribe you, and a message from

you will merely confirm that the address they have used is real.

I hope this is some help.
