Hi,

I'm looking at buying a Nissan 300ZX, if i'm honest i'm suprised they will insure me so I need to check if i've got this right. I went on http://www.confused.com and typed in my details, put a 300ZX Turbo 1991 and this came up:-

"NISSAN 300 ZX TURBO 1990-1994 2960cc COUPE Manual Petrol"

So I clicked this one, which I believe is the last shape? but the insurance for some reason is really really cheap and for some reason it's cheaper than a non-turbo one?

Am I missing anything?

Also if this is the right quote is there anything I need to look out for, i'll have about 2.5K to spend max, I would prefer manual but if I get a better car then don't mind auto. I can't afford for any problems so I need it to be reliable.

Any help would be much appreciated please?

Dan.

i would say your first call would be to double check on the insurance quote as it may be wrong. your better off calling them direct. if you search the forum for (insurance) you will find a few specialist companies that most owners on here use. what it says in your post (1990-1994) is wrong to start with.

That quote might be for a uk spec.

Jap spec insurance quotes can sometimes be double the uk spec quote!

Make sure you point that out to insurance company as a lot wont insure an import.

how old are you and do you have any ncb i pay £380 but i'm 28 with 9 years ncb but if you want 1 i may be sellin mine in the near future its an auto but its mint £2400 ono

Welcome Dan.

That looks like a UK Twin Turbo you got a quote for, the reason its cheaper than the Non-turbo is becuase all non-turbos are Imports and a lot of Insurance companies like to charge stupid pointless premiums as soon as the word import is mentioned.

Running one on a budget could be an issue, they mught be cheap to buy now but they were not far of £40k cars when new and cost of ownership will reflect that. A Max budget of £2500 will mean your looking at the lower end of the market, and all to often somebody will buy a 300zx for £2000 and it will need another £2000 of work doing on it, sometimes others get lucky though.

Hi,

Thanks for a quick response. Believe it or not i'm 19, I have 2 years no claims and they offered me £1330, i keep checking everything I do and whether it's a manual or an Auto it's the right price.

So I need to make sure I get a UK model, how can I make sure of this, just I don't know how to tell which model is the model I described above? Is there anything I need to look out for to guarentee I get the right model for the insurance quote?

I have an MGB GT atm which does about 22 mpg lol so I can't imagine it being worse petrol than this. I just need something thats reliable and I can't see a Nissan being unreliable but are there anything in particular prone to go?

SNOWY GT - Thanks mate, I need to sell my car first but if the car your going to sell is the same as the insurance quote then could you send some photo's to daniel@karaszy-kulin.co.uk???

Most adverts will say wether its UK or Import. A few tale-tale clues are UK size number plate on back, fog lights built into rear bumper, washer jets on Front bumper.

If its a SWB (2 seater) or a non-turbo then you can rule it out, as they were only available as Import.

My Twin Turbo did around 12 MPG around town, upto around 20MPG on a long run.

For best reliability/lower maintenance costs, a non turbo would be good IMO, but then you'll have the higher insurance issue.

Hi,

I have rang the insurance company to double check the prices, and it's 100% but it has to be a UK model and a Turbo. Are the UK models hard to find?

Wheres the best place to look, just the norm Autotrader? I can start ringing dealers now to see if they can part ex but Private sellers will have to wait until i've sold my car. Are these relatively safe in an accident?

I'm not really too fussed about the MPG

Autotrader, Ebay, Pistonheads.... although the best place is this forums Cars for sale section

Safe - for there age, yes. Well built and a good size.

Typical average MPG is low 20's , will drop in the low-mid teens if your heavy footed all the time, and can get as much as low 30's on a long motorway run.

Don't mean to be throwing spanners in the works mate, but as a general rule I wouldn't rely on a £2500 Zed as a daily drive. Zeds are very complicated and notorously awkward to work on due to the V6 in the tight engine bay. Compared to most performance cars they are not reliable as there are a lot of wiring, pipes, two turbos, auto gearbox, etc that can have problems. For one to be considered reliable it should have all of these replaced, new turbos, and be manual or a rebuilt auto, you would pay 4k or prob more for this.

Have you looked at the running costs? they are cheap to buy but expensive to run properly. Look at £600 - £800 for a set of decent tyres, petrol roughly 20mpg on average give or take, auto gearbox rebuild over 1k, turbo rebuild over 1k,etc. Just think people should know what they are getting into. You'll be overdrawn if you own one! You should have access to £1-2k for repairs.

They are awesome cars though :nana2:

I reckon the z is as reliable as any other 15 year old turbo car, its just much more difficult to work on imo

I have to agree with that mines 16 years old, i've had it 2 years and it aint missed a beat infact its just flew through its second MOT since i've had it  but sayin that she might have to go soon (the car not the wife) lol

There are ten times as many little things to go wrong on a Zed than your average straight 6 supra or skyline or whatever, and they are usually an absolute mission to fix. Probably the sole reason why Zeds are now so cheap and don't have as good a reputation amongst enthusiasts as other performance cars, which are usually not as good cars either

i see your point royal but if ya get 1 thats been looked after they are usualy ok its just the luck of the draw i suppose and by the sounds of what your sayin i must have a good'en

I always used mine as a daily drive but I think the point thats trying to be made is that if anything does happen its going to cost you a fair bit to sort out and obviously wont be around as your daily drive for quite some time while its being fixed!!

The perfect answer! :D

Welcome to the club mate.

Like you would expect me to say, these are great cars. Providing you buy a good one! Steer clear of Ebay £2k examples just in case.......

You may hear a few members damning the reliability of a 300zx but I do not agree. Buy a good one and it will be fine - it is a Nissan afterall! I have had my UK spec for over 4 years (and 25k miles) now and it has not missed a beat. It is a 1991 auto, now on almost 89k miles yet I still trust it more than my other cars that have a lot less miles under their belts (a 2002 Rav-4 and 1999 SLK). However, if you plan to increase the power significantly then beware.........

If you are used to 22mpg then don't worry. I still average 18mpg with a healthy mixture of driving, including some silly moments (although I did see 11mpg once but that was all silly overtaking and hard b-road thrashing etc :D )

There are now some insurers that don't penalise imports - do a search here.

And finally the best advice, once you buy one subscrbe to the club - it is the best £20 you will ever spend on your 300zx ;)

Good hunting mate!

Richard

Actually that's true.......

.....until you look at the gauge :p

I bought mine from a garage in Tamworth (not Jeff BTW ;) ). I filled the tank to the brim before driving home and after a "sprited" drive down a somewhat empty M40 there wasn't much left when I arrived :nono:

Definately worth it though :hyper:
