right you may recall a while ago I had issues with the back heated window...

today since it was raining and my car was getting all steamy... (no funny business) i stuck the heated window thing on .... about 1 minute later i could smell this burning.. switched it off, turned around and looked at the window - the little element was red red hot... by the time I managed to turn around - huge bang !

Smashed rear window! If it wasnt for the tints it would of shattered everywhere!!

anyway - anyone had to replace theirs... where did you get it and is it worth claiming..

I've phoned a few places and been quoted £1050 plus vat to remove and fit a new one...

pics of the crack and shatter from outside and inside...

tell ya what.. if it wasnt for the tinted windows it would of smashed all over my face!

damn lucky...

cheers Stella will check it out

I would say your best bet is to replace the rear bootlid altogether from breakers for around £50-£100.And you should also be able to get one the right colour. Thare are plenty of breakers yards with parts for these available. Muffin.

your windscreen cover through your insurance, should cover all windows of your car ;)

you'll probably have to pay the 60 quid excess though

doubt I'll get the right colour (pearl white) but ... its worth a try!

Loads of breakers around... but just not down here! grrrrrrrrr

£100 excess on mine... but that will fook my claims up - dammit! these cars dont come cheap!

I'm sure someone got one replaced cheaply or on insurance or something. SuffolkZX maybe?

Or was that the front one... not sure.

Changing the whole boot might have other issues (paint match, rust etc). Could be the way to go though.

Quite a few insurers say a windscreen claim won't affect NCB. Not sure if it's the same for the rear window.

Bloody Hell!!.. Never heard of that happening.

Glad you're OK..

I would say either claim on your insurance, or get a new/replacement tailgate.. I think Silverlake still have a couple of breakers in stock.

Well mine just doesn't work at all so was concidering chucking a brick through it and claiming on my policy just before the renewal date lol

claim on you insurnace as they will have to fit all new trim pieces which are about £300's worth ;) Mine was smashed too today but not insured :(

thanks for your help guys! much appreciated...

Just sorted something out via pm! Now just have to drive 134 miles at snail pace so it doesnt smash everywhere!

bin bags/duck tape here i come!

hunnie you'd be beta taking it out really ordepending on how strong the tint is tape straight over the glass on the outside and over the boot edge's if you no what i mean.

can tell you the best way to get it out without hardly any mess though if you want. we done quite afew. for real

i can almost (as i've never heard of any doing it before) guarantee that it won't affect your insurance (i worked as a claims assessor for Norwich Union for 5 years)

they won't have to replace any plastics as i'm assuming that they didn't melt or shatter :nelson:

the trim would have to be changed if done by the insurance as it's bonded in and can only be fitted once ;)

what trim are you on about?

If it's the trim on the inside of the car, that can come off and go back on.

If you're on about the trim on the window to bond it / seal it in place, that will come as part of the window and covered under the insurance.

Most are like that mate!

I've had a few window claims and not one insurance company has made an issue of my NCB or loaded the premium for it.

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

Yes, I had mine done on the insurance, it didnt cost extra come renewal time either. As for driving with it like that, personally I wouldnt, and defaintely dont open the window as you drive along, the air coming into the car will pop whats left out for sure. The 2 choices I would go for are either a complete new hatch or an insurance job, removing the glass from a second hand hatch stands a good chance of them smashing as they are bonded in, thats how mine was broken first time, also try to get the new trim on the insurance as well, they shrink when removed and when it comes to refitting you are left with a nasty looking gap.
