hi guys quick question,

I have just spoken to a guy called Julian at Garage-D who reckons i'll get similar/better braking performance from using the standard nissan 300zx calipers with r34 discs (with brackets on the calipers of course); apparently the nissan caliper is better engineered than the brembo? is this true?

not true, stock calipers are a weak point in the brake system. Its quite a bit smaller for starters than the Brembos.

depends if he meant the UK Cast iron or the J spec alloy ones .. i chnaged over to UK cast iron a while back with with brembo disks and what a difference it made and i regulary give mine a caning down country lanes on the way to my marina

interesting! so the UK cast irons are 'better' than jspec alloy ones, but are they better than brembos? i have a UK car!

I certainly wouldnt say they are better than brembos. However, I have had the UK calipers with the larger discs and the stopping power is definately increased over stock discs. When I eventually got R33 brembos the difference was only marginal. The major difference was felt upgrading to bigger discs, as long as your calipers are in good shape!

I upgraded my jap TT swb to brembos all round with new disks and pads. Did make a huge difference in my opinion. Also upgraded to braided hoses.

You may also be in luck cos there are some on ebay at the moment.

No one I know however so not a recommendation just an observation.

No, Uk and Jap are identical !

However before 93 (for both UK and Jap) the Calipers were alloy, which are lighter but are more likely to cause Disc warpage. After 93 they changed to Iron.

There is no difference in braking force though. Any difference felt would of been down to condition of the calipers. (sticking pistons, leaking seals...etc)

Changing from Stock Alloy to Stock Iron is not an upgrade.

Correct as regards the using the r34 discs, it can improve braking quite a lot.

Hence why i do it as a kit :)

As for the Brembos NOT being better than nissan ones, it is not correct, though once your using the bigger discs, you will see a marginal improvement if you eventually add the skyline brembos at a later date, as Turboz did..

BazzaJG has the stoptech kit although his engine is still in rebuild so he wont have had chance to test them out yet.

I think logically the bigger discs are a much better idea than just a caliper swap. (more surface area to get to grips with?) But when you go bigger discs you will have to change the calipers too and that can leave you with a serious bill. So what is the overall performance differences if you do upgrade just the calipers, how much more braking performance do you get with the complete change as opposed............. I have been giving this some serious thought lately as I am going to upgrade mine soon.

Sorry to hi-jack the thread. Thanks vini

thanks for the responses guys... getting hold of brembos isnt much of a problem for me, a family friend in australia can get me a full set of 4 r34 gtr brembo calipers (no pads or discs) for about 300 shipped here, which seems like a bargain?

but i would need discs and pads, and i was wondering whether discs on their own would suffice... dilemmas dilemmas

one more question, can i use rear r34 brembos with the stock zed rear discs?

I used to have original alloy callipers and cross-drilled Brembo discs with EBC pads and braking was acceptable, definitely better than the original discs/pads.

I can see how larger discs will improve performance, as long as the callipers are working well enough to exert the clamping force required.

I then swapped to 350z calipers and discs on the front and the difference is significant ! A gentle squeeze on the pedal has the tyres chirping over the white lines and really digging in on grippy tarmac.

I'm now fitting (eventually) rear 350Z diiscs and callipers. The discs are somewhat larger than the originals and will mean the removal of the dust shields, plus modification of the calliper mounting points on the hubs.

It's not really about larger surface area, it's the increased distance from the centre of the hub, it's down to mechanical advantage.

I'm sure there's a Stoptec document that explains the maths of this somewhere.
