Hello all,

I recently checked my auto gear oil which was over filled I have just drained some off so its at its correct level, Iv been having probs before with gear changes 1-2-4-3-4 when driving hard the oil is very brownish colour obviously in need of a change, because of this would the gear changes be due to overfilled/dirty oil? theres no bits inside the oil which is good! and how much gear oil do these zeds take? on a uk tt that is!!

Cheers for your time....

ime not being funny here but how you checking level, you should get the car warm and on level ground, then put the selector through r,d,1,2,then put it in park with the motor running then check :) iff this is what you,ve done then this message will self destruct in 5 seconds :p

 eeeerrrrrr yea was over filled

If the oil is brownish that its then it may suggest a slipping gear clutch inside the box as the oil is usually red if its ATF Dextron, cant say what colour synthetic oil is. I have a similar problem with mine, I get 1st to 2nd ok, then 2nd goes into 3rd but I dont have 100 per cent full drive and after releasing the throttle slightly it goes into 4th and will drive ok. I have bought a strainer/filter and will be replacing it next weekend. It involves dropping the gearbox sump and changing the strainer/filter (the boxes dont have a seperate filter) and I am gonna change the oil 2 or 3 times to see if it makes a difference. There have been a few posts/pictures of partially blocked strainer/filters but I am not sure of the outcome if by changing this part the box drives any better. Anyways I think more than likely the box in my case is on its way out. I will let you know the outcome in my case.

Cheers John Crisp

yep overfilling an auto box is as as bad as not enough oil:(

but wouldn't explain the brownish colour unless its NEVER been changed

or as John says some bands are breaking up, shouldnt be hard to get a reading on the dipstick once warm and doing the above, then leave a couple of minutes ticking over and the reading should be accurate

the filter being blocked COULD explain an erratic box change and worth the few quid in oil to HOPEFULLY cure your problems
