Does anyone know if Garrett or someone else make a Variable Vane Turbo for the 300ZX ?

I think Garrett call them VNT's.

VNT turbos only work with diesel engines, high exhaust temperatures kills the VNT mechanism :( I know some guys that tried them on petrol engines and it didn't last long. Plus the vane geometry is vacuum actuated and it needs to be altered to work with a regular wastegate actuator. Plus the lack a true wastegate so correct turbine matching its essential or you may have boost creep, sometimes the use of a external wastegate helps.

Garrett makes another design it's called VAT (Variable Area turbine) they come as standard in a PUG 405, but I’m unaware of their reliability.

Problem with vnt turbos is they get sooted up too easily causing the vanes to stick.

Ive lost count of the number of primeras almeras and tinos ive seen suffering with this, only solution is to have the turbo stripped, the vanes trimmed and refited a job that you dont see alot of change out of 300 notes.

I say thank got you cant get VNT's on a zed, it would just be another moving part to break!

Materials have moved on now and they can make them reliable on petrol cars now. Just interesting to know.

oh ffs - stop making me spend money

anyone know of a upgrade for a mitsubishi turbo??

I read somewhere that a Skyline fitted with a single one was making 1.2 Bar pressure below 2000 revs !

With these you can go up in turbo size but not lose the bottom end so bad

do these work on the same premise as a variable vane pump, with like a conical casing. if so. then problem areas will definitely be vane tips and springs. we use these onboard ships as central priming systems for centifugel pumps. and they get excessive wear on the vane tips which is essentially the sealing medium to increase the pressure

no just think the vanes direct the exhaust gases at the turbine blade further from the centre at low rpm (more efficient) then at the centre at high rpm (allowing high turbine speed)

Someone needs to supply these as an aftermarket :)

I was talking to Andy at Turbo Technics (I think that was his name) november last year, apparently they have produced a set of VNT's for the z32 and are now available.

Might be worth a phone call if any ones interested.

My car went into Turbo Technics to trial the new Vnt turbos they made, they messed me about left right and centre not all their fault mind you mainly my so called agents fault.

Just to comfirm they don't fiit the 300zx purely down to size, they work by having 2 actuators and are very big in physical size and wouldn't fit on the drivers side down to major components in the way.

This is direct from Turbo Technics them selves as they had my car for a few months to try to get them to fit without any luck.

On another note, my mechanic has warned me against this kind of setup as i was still keen. He said he has no end of Diesels with problems running VNT as they need tuning all the time as they keep loosing the tune or something.
