FFS, I think it goes even higher as its bubbled, but didnt really wanna rip it all off.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Mine is a bit like that, but not as bad. It is now 15 years old, many UK manufactured cars of that age will have been scapped by now.

japanese or not bud it will still rust! unfortunatly a small break in the paintwork once it settles in its like cancer spreads. I know someone who had an alfa romeo and at the time was 3 years old, the whole metal work below the radiator rusted away and had to be replaced.

Mike Feeney posted a price for the inner & outer sills a while back. Seem to have £70+ in my mind. Then cut out, weld, finish etc. Gotta be £200-ish.

Im still not getting how your supprised its got rust. its a 15 year old car. If its been over here 5 years expect rust.

They may not have it when they come over here, but as they dont have any protection against teh salt, they will rot like a Italian within 2 years.

On the plus side its not hard to repair.

Mark..

I know a good paint guy, who is very good, quick worker, and very reasonable, in Southampton.. I have used him several times in the past, and never hesitate to recommend him.. If you want his name/number, pm me mate.

Got the same problem with mine unfortunately, only really came through approaching christmas and now i've found the whole sills are rotten through so i'll be getting them welded up soon and resprayed before i start bolting side skirts on etc

Salty UK Roads, Incorrect Jacking (causing damage to sills, allowing the elements to attack) and blocked targa drain seals.

Import Z32's have the same under protection as UK cars.

I had a similar problem last year (see this thread) and it cost me about £220 including parts and labour to sort properly.

indeed, i think youll find thats rotting from the inside out... blocked targa drain for sure :(

hmmmm. you've got me paranoid now. Where are the targa drains routed and how can they be cleared?

where are the rear targa drain holes please. At the mo i have the front wings off and the targa drain pipes dont go down and out of the car they just let the water out in to the wing. is this right??? I'm about to start waxoiling the whole of the car inside the wings front and rear, inject it to the sills re-do underneath and the wheel arches.

This is what the bodyshop told me when this happened to mine.

Basically the targa drain pipe connects to a metal pipe in the sill so the water drains away. Unfortunately this connecting section corroded and the targa drain then proceeded to dump the water in the sill. After this happened the sill soon corroded until the paint bubbled. rotten from the inside out.

This seems to be a very common fault on all Z's! So even tho you never take your car out in the rain, snow whatever, simply washing it will contribute.

mine currently requires the very same repair from a blocked targa drain... when i hack it apart for the repair il be looking into some kind of modification for it. however now it is no longer a daily driver and wont see rain too often i think regular preventitive maintenance should do it. if i would have known about the problem earlier i would have realised the drain was goin to cause a problem... all you need to do is take off the targas and find the 2 drain holes fwd and aft, stick the end of a blow gun down and check it flows freely out where it should! if you dont have a compressed air supply... take it to sum1 who does!

it also caused leaky targas for me. i tried several time to seal the problem area with a vaseline type material but still had leakage. i believe that when it rained the targa drain channels eventually filled up because the drain pipe filled up and the whole targa area ends up swimming, it was then leaking through areas i hadnt sealed with a vaseline! could be just being over paranoid though!
