The mrs and myself are looking at buying a golden retriever puppy, does any1 have any advice on where to buy from, recommended breeders etc, what to look for, how to train/raise the puppy well and any other related information you have for owning and buying a dog.

Cheers in advance for your help,

Joel. :)

contact the kennel club for breeders...and go to a good library or buy from a petshop a guide book on dog care....oh and buy a cage...its cuts down on destruction and mess a hell of a lot

got one from these guys....brillant service and price...recommend them...plan ahead i'm not sure if the retriever gets lonely (and howl the place down) but if your thinking of 2 dogs (if you do dont get 2 bitches they'll fight) then get a bigger crate first off

lol cheers chap... im finding very few breeders selling via the KC webby. i found a webby called epupz.co.uk. they have a much larger selection and most pups on there are KC registered. been reading about gettin a cage too, seems like a good idea.

Joel

try phoning some local farmers...look them up in yell.com...they often breed lab retrievers...or will know someone who does

We have a crate for our dog and it is excellent. We have had no furniture chewed and come home to no destruction (apart from when I leave stuff on top of it!! Doh).

Very very good idea.

Joel,......i'm guessing do you have any kids?...if so gundogs are deffo the way to go...retievers...cockers...pointers...spaniels etc...they have nice soft mouths and are not snappy / nippy...good choice for youngsters...

Buy one from a recognised breeder. Our Retriever died recently at 13, which is a good age for them. Make sure they are KC registered, and that you can see their parents, and the hip and eye score. They are large dogs, with an excellent temprement, but if you get a badly bred one (puppy farm for instance), you are in for high vet bills and a grumpy or moody dog/bitch.

Training is reasonably simple as they have a good nature, but remember, praise good behaviour and ignore bad. Also remember that the pup needs to know it's place. You and your missus are the pack leaders.

I would suggest that when you do come to pick a pup look at their colour, which IMO should be a ginger, their jaws (the front teeth should meet when the mouth is closed) as some are known for overbite but as long as you don't intend to show or breed, a slight overbite is not too bad and their eyes.

Good luck with your search and take your time to choose wisely.

As you're local to me I know there was a big litter of black ones available recently. Not sure whether they're all gone to people in the village yet, but PM me if you want me to ask around.

i will give you the best advice - dont !!!

and if you really must buy a dog get a small yorkie or something

i had an akita puppy which i had to loose because of work etc..its not nice to have to let go - so unless you 100% having a dog is like having a baby !!

or maybe im just a grouch because i had to give up mine !!! :(

Unless theres someone in the house all day to look after it then dont get one, its just not fair on the animal. Thats why they destroy peoples houses, its because they are bored and untrained.

If theres no one ther get a cat, they can pretty much look after themselves

I do agree there. It seems pointless having a dog if its going to be left home alone all day!

i work nights so i am at home all day and i dont sleep much when i am on shift. i work a 4 on 4 off shift pattern so i am at home alot... in fact i only work 6 months of the year... and then i get 27 days paid holiday (which if i took all at once would work out at around 84 days off in a row  )... and if i want 3months paid sick leave lol! easy life...

so its pretty pointless having all this time off if im going to be left at home alone all day ;)

and then whenever im not here, the mrs is here :)

If you need a cage for your dog, you shouldnt have a dog in the first place. A dog, especially a Golden Retriever is part of the family, not just an accsessory and couldnt be confined to a box. How cruel!

Thats just MY opinion of course.

Sometimes it is necessary to cage a dog, but this is only the last resort, and IMO should not be used as a standard.

Retrievers are not known to cause a lot of damage, generally they are like babies, so when they start to teeth (and yes they do, but not in the way we do) they chew. Give them an alternative and I also found that a small coating of pepper on their favourite bit of wall/chair etc, tends to put them off.

My old man use to put Tabasco on our puppy's favorite chewing spots, worked a treat!!
