Putting my exhausts back on after getting the prop straightened and sheared one of the three studs on the turbo downpipe! Not bloody happy, when does it ever end! :(

I know this is common so how do I change it? I really hope the turbo doesnt have to come out etc or I am going to miss another summer with a broken z. :(

they need changing as the thread on one of the others is about dead as well

They are held onto the turbo with 4 bolts right?

Yeah the manifold is held onto the turbo by 4 13mm bolts / studs.

Also the heat shield gets in the way.

Is it the nearside or offside which has sheared, cos if its nearside it seems easier to do by removing the battery and going from the top for the top bolts.

Yeah its the passenger / battery side that is broke, 2 of the 3 studs snapped on the last manifold before the down pipe. can they be pulled out with a stud extractor?

i have the manifolds off my turbos lying down the shed mate if you fancy me bringing them with me tomorrow?

I don't know exactly which part you need unless i saw it but i'll bring the lot for you to sift through

Dont think i will be making it tomorrow mate, no car and its mothers day etc.

thanks for the offer tho, i might need the bits

You might be able to drill the stud out if there is enough access...

Stud would probably come out with a stud extractor a lot easier if you had heat on it also it might be worth having a word with your local exhaust centre as it would be a lot easier on a ramp and might not be that expensive..

Either way Good luck

yeah exhaust center sounds your best bet at least they deal with these things day in & day out!!

how much of the stud is sticking out?? if you have a bit you could weld a nut on, but if its flush which i bet it is then drilling is your only way :x:

There is enough room to get an extractor / torch / drill in there but the cars not going very far with one exhaust!

Can the studs be removed then?

Managed to remove a stud from the thermostate housing by welding a nut on and then undoing it (thanks to Pete and his steady hand).

Not sure if these will unscrew tho, anyone done it before on the three manifold studs?

Yes studs can be removed but are often seized into exhaust due to heat...

You just have to be careful and watch you dont crack manifold by applying to much force... always better with heat applied around the stud area for easier removal..

A stud is threaded both ends........

yeah the ones in the thermostate housing are like that

hoping the ones in the exhaust are the same

Thanks Bladebloke for confirming that it is possible to remove them with a stud extractor.

The local car shop are getting me one in for tomorrow morning. I will heat them up with a torch and have a go and undoing them.

If that doesnt work will try welding a nut on and undoing them.

If not the manifold is coming off and the car wont be on the road again this week!

Will post the results up after thowing some more spanners at the shed in anger!

Well I have tried plan a, heated with blow torch and tried removing with stud extractor. That just broke the extractor.

plan b, weld a nut on and undo, this just snapped the stud again leaving it almost flush.

now its plan c!

grind the b&*tards flush and drill them out, then will nut and bolt it instead

had enough now!
