So anyway chums

I am now at the next stage of "spending my hard earned" so far I have the exhaust, air intake sorted(nice one thanks Johnny) my next plan is to put a straight through exhaust into the equation.

(I currently have a cat back veilside system)

I have decided that a gearbox oil cooler would probably be a good (but boring)idea before I go any further, But I also want to fit a JWT ecu

+ boost jets (obviously..!!??)but I am incredibly impatient so what would be the sensible approach

"fit the pipes JWT and take a chance .. OR

be very very sensible and do the oil cooler first??

OR is the automatic gearbox on a 1990TT import so strong that it needs no more improvement (..from what I have learnt in my short 300ZX life I wish it was so..)

The main problem is ..will an oil cooler give me any return for my ££££ or should I just say f**k it live for now ??

Sadly I think I know already know the answer

but perhaps deep down I am thinking that somebody might say.

"Dear paul I have been running my zx without a Gearbox oil cooler and.............

.....I dont care If you were a model in vogue I am happily married ya bitch so stop touching my genitals when you think no-one is looking..!!!!!!

sorry about that last bit everyone ..yet another lesson for you youngsters ....

Dont mix sherry and tizer!!!

Thanks all

Dear Paul,

Go read those very interesting subjects about wheelnuts and lightbulbs...and stop whining !

You can probably get an oil-cooler at Halfords also ;-)

And if you're really lucky they might even have the JWT-chip.

Paul,

The auto gearbox on the jap imports is renouned for being the weak link...... goodbye :-)

Anyway... Check the colour of your gearbox oil which generally will tell you the condition. It should be a nice clean red wine colour. Maybe even get a gearbox oil change by a specialist which it has probably never had before.

The gearbox cooler is a must if your going to drive the gears hard ie lots of kick downs where there alot of load on the box.

The ecu and boost jets will give you your best bang for the £ but I think it's a question of when the gearbox will go, not if it will go.

Be prepared for an overhaul at some stage. I had one in my prev Z following engine mods and so has Hairsy.

i think i could in my opinion say let the gearbox run without it as if its on its way out then an oil cooler wont stop it going anyway. my auto takes a pounding at every cruise i go to and is still kickin. i'll wait till mine breaks then get it all done at the same time

Thanks for your replies very helpfull as usual

lymon sorry for my enthusiasm unfortunately

I do not have an engeneering degree so I appreciate others help and suggestions promise not to winge anymore

Damn is that the time I think Halfords is shut .. end of subject I hope..

I had my box go bang and it was due to the oil cooler becoming blocked, mine is a jap tt. The oil cooler on imports for the autobox is smaller than the UK one as well. It is also on the right hand side as part of the radiator and as such cooling must be limited as it will leech heat from the radiator. This may be beneficial initially to speed up the rise in temperature of the Auto fluid but possibly not good when the box is under heavy load and trying to lose heat. Mine now has an after market oil cooler with larger bore pipes from the autobox to the cooler to prevent the risk of blockage, also it is now mounted in the lower inlet of the bumper in cool clean air.

The new oil cooler was also a stipulation when the box was rebuilt for guarantee purposes.

So if your box is in good condition it is worth considering as it will improve the life expectancy of your box.
