Hi all,

This is a long shot, but does anyone know where u could get aftermarket intake-cam pulleys for the Zed. Ive replaced mine twice with second hand ones and they still leak oil at where the neck of the pulley meets the cam-oil seal. :headvswal

Cheers. :)

Dont hks do them im not sure .

Im sure they do but cant find any sites that do them, and nissan r chargin 500 notes for them new, and thats each!!

Any links people. :)

Jun do them for around 350 quid me thinks. The only thing with fitting aftermarket/adjustable ones is they disable the VTC. However i do recall reading about a guy who claimed he got around that, somehow!

I'll search for yer, either way easy enough to get em bud.

imo it's so rare for more than 1 set being fitted to be leaking in same spot, your deffo 100% it's not actually a wee bit further in where the Cam comes through to the pulley ?

Have you ran the engine with the covers off and actually seen oil being sprayed up at you as the pullies spin ?

Hi Smithy,

Thought u might pop up, as u know ive had this prob for a while now, ive basically replaced both intake pulleys with second hand ones, and when i started the car there it was oil lines on inside of the bonnet. :(

I then read somewhere on how they leak from the press fit seam on the pulley, and that this can be fixed by soldering the seam on the pulley, this time had a friend of mine do it he took his time and made sure all 4 cam seals were replaced and the rocker cover gaskets, he also double checked for any damage done to the end of cams, none found.

So started her all was well not one drop of oil on the bonnet, then took her for a 20 min drive, stopped opened bonnet and there it was the two lines of oil on the inside of the bonnet directly above the intake pulleys. :headvswal

So for me its basically been a process of elimination, so the only place that oil can be leakin through is where the pulley meets the cam seal/cam, surely if the neck of the pulley, (where the cam seal sits) is not perfect, is it possible this is how oil is still gettin through. :headvswal

Im basically guessin now.

Also since soldering the puilleys it doesnt leak any oil when startin her, its only after uve been for run and put the engine under load.

Andy.

What year is your car? Or more importantly engine? Well, actually, the heads LOL. The Cams were changed (from 94> IIRC) and were a different length so required different pulleys...

Mines a 1989 TT if that helps. R u sayin that the second hand pulleys i got might of been from a 94>?!?

Yeah 94> cams were shorter so wouldn't seal properly if a 94> pulley was fitted to a pre 94 cam...

Interesting, ill check but dont think they where from a 94>, any oher ideas?!?LOL!!

it wont mak a blind bit of differance if for example the mating surface between the head and cam is damaged, every pully or oil seal you fit, it will always leak! so it could be that!

or if your using cheap non OEM cam seals, they tend to act like a sieve

finally on a standard engine an aftermarket ajustable pully will effect performance and you will loose the low end grunt without VVTC

there is a way of keeping vvt however fitting a perm feed to it may cause engine issues in the longterm especially oil starvation to the topend, vvt works at certain rpm intervals if its permanantly working then work it out.

Have seen a few cases where the seal has worn a groove in the pulley and caused leaks - this could well be the case with a s/h one...

The only reason am thinkin aftermarket is due to the standard ones lettin oil through, and there was no sign of any scrapes on any of the mating surfaces, and ive also used OEM parts for the Zed. :)

This is where i think prob lies and TBH ive exhausted all other possiblities, both second hand pulleys where not perfect on the neck which meets the cam seal, surely if the mating surface on the neck of the pulley isnt perfect oil will leak through, guess its a case of hunting two good ones, off a low mileage Zed. Wot u think?

That would be my next suggestion tbh :)

TBH mate, am thinking it's not the replacement pulley your fitting.

What i done was ran the engine and with cam covers off, held a small piece of cardboard directly above the pulley, under normal revs if this pulley is leaking, it will splatter the card with oil. You say you think it happens under load ? pullies would leak simply on tickover. The techies know more than me as to what actually happens underload, but worth trying the above to be certain.

smithy

The simple answer is that oil pressure increases with revs ;)
