when ive driven my zed for a bit and come to switch off the ignition i can turn the key and remove it from the ignition barrel but the car keeps going....just like a turbo timer but mines a n/a if i press the accelerator it dies and stops but if not it can run on for ages

ive tried changing the ignition barrel for a new one but it still does it

it only stops on the key if i turn it off really slowly and even then it doesnt always work

please help as ive nearly died twice from carbon monoxide poisoning when i was in my garage

many thanx matty

have you got an alarm immobiliser??

yes mate but it did it before i fit the alarm

i had the same problem on an mr2. It was due to the immobiliser playing up. Could be dodgy wiring with the ignition but that a stab in the dark that im sure you have already thought of. Why not just remove the dash enough to get at ignition wires and put a multimeter accross them.

At least then you can find out if its a wiring problem.

have you got an alarm with a built in turbo timer m8??, maybe its gone a bit dicky, just when you said when you press the accelerator it dies

as mine has a remote start/turbo timer and won't allow the car to be driven

when remote started

ie the minute you press the gas or brake the car dies,

thought turbo timers were only for turbo cars ...mines not a turbo and the alarm was an aftermarket one that was proffesionally fitted but i had this problem before the alarm was put on

had wiring checked mate and ive even tried swearing at it but to no avail

well as far as im aware the ignition of most cars consists of 3 stages. Please all correct me if im wrong as usually i am.

You have got a live for the first click, then a live at the second click, and a live for the third which starts the car.

When you turn the key to the off position it breaks the live causing the car to cut off. If for some reason that live isnt being broken then the car will not stop. The turbo timer simply keeps this live constant for whatever time you set and then breaks the live thus switching the car off.

So is it possible that for some reason the live wire isnt turning off properly??

yes m8 but the alarm doesnt know if your car is a turbo lol

but as you say it happened before it was fitted cant be an issue

just have to remember to press the gas lol

try the black box that fits on the ignition barrel. you will probably find the terminals have corroded or worn accross each other causing the selector to touch two terminals at the same time.

I had this when I first bought my Zed, turned out to be a dodgy ECU. Bought one off a member here, swapped mine out and never had a problem from that day on.

I guess there was a dry joint or something on the ECU circuit board but never did fully establish where.

havent seen many N/A's with turbo timers?? :-)

believe it or not but turbo timers can be used by N/A cars as well as turbo'd cars to settle down after a long run. yes primarily they're there to make sure the turbos have oil supply while spinning down, but any car can benefit from a moment's break after a hard drive before turning off.

Had a similar problem a few years ago on another car, (not Z) and found it to be quite simple but a pain to find (took about 6 months) the give away is that when you turn the key slowly everythings fine...At the back of the ignition switch is a small black plastic thing with all the wires going in to it, It screws on the back of the key switch, now although the screws were tight on this there was too much clearance around them so when the key is turned the whole black plastic thing revolves slightly with it so the ignition isnt actually turning off its just moving round with the key. I solved it with areldite, may be a bit permenant for you though!!

I've got a faulty ECU with pretty much the same problem. I have to physically unplug the ECU to stop the engine !

I just pulled the fusible link for the fuel pump each time and then let Bob at Safe & Sound have a play until he worked out the problem :D
