Hi Folks,

I have found a nice standard Zed that I am interested in but it has an Auto box fitted. I have obviously driven many Auto cars over the years but am just wondering how the old Zed goes with one fitted?

Is the kickdown good on them?

Can you hold the box down in the low numbers long enough when booting it?

How about through twisty corners?

Has anyone done the Nurburgring in one?

Cheers for now

Dave...

Oh yeah, its a twin turbo model by the way.

Many Zeds are autos - must be because it is a fast GT car (in the DB7/XK8 style) rather than an out and out sports car.

As such, Nissan have gone a long way to ensure performance should not suffer by fitting an auto box. Therefore it is a good 'box and it works well with the twin turbo engine. Providing the 'box is in good condition, kick-down is fast and instant. The mid-range overtaking ability is superb and whilst the manual may be slightly quicker 0-60 (but we are only talking a tenth or two), the auto is supposedly quicker 0-100. But again the margin is small.

The manual is more the driver's car (of course) and feels like it has more urgency about it, whilst the auto doesn't feel as quick it is. The speed builds up smoother, that's all - look at your speedo and in the rear view mirror and you'll be pleasantly surprised!

If you are buying a japanese import, be sure to fit the UK spec oil cooler upgrade otherwise you will cook the 'box. As long as it's been looked after and given an oil change as required it will be fine.

Richard :D

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

i have just sold my auto tt and to be honest the only real difference is the auto is very smooth even under hard acceleration

and if you modify them with more boost the manual seems a lot quicker and more exciting

hi bud ...

i did the Nurburgring in 9:48....in standerd N/A auto...and jay did the ring in 9:12 in a standerd TT auto running 12 or 15 psi on the tub's...this was timed on our 2nd lap....and jay had the auto box on overdrive off...and used the 2nd gear to slow down into the corner's.....

hope this help's ..wozza

..

the jdm models have a hold switch for the autobox so when in drive you can hold a gear if need be... the uk specs dont have this function which is annoying and dangerous! especially when traveling round a corner at pace and u slightly back off the throttle... the box shifts up and its bye bye grip.

Hold button locks car in 2nd gear, for use in slow bad driving conditions ie snow etc

Never had my box shift up on me like that, mainly cos i kept it in power mode with OD off ;) mega nippy

Nicething with the auto is when you floor it, it just keeps going and going.

Also max torque is around 3500-4000 rpm iirc which makes for a very useable amount of power.

All that aside.....

Im converting to manual now cos I blew the box

I love the Auto box in mine. But I think you can forget anything like proper drifting if thats your thing as the manual has more control of the power delivery.

The best point with the autobox is that its easy and the power delivery is very smooth.

If your ever in a traffic jam........its perfect ;)

YES and NO ........i think it's down to driver Skill......imo.....but yes it's easyer in a manuel( viniboy ;) )....

BUT if you are good with a AUTO box ,,it all look's the same .. ;) lot's of smoke and sideways action.......

as vid from BURNOUT 2007.....will show.... ;) :D

here here ,,,,,in traffic and easy driving they're great ,,,... :D

...

When your playing with the zed the only thing to watch when starting to go sideways.

With a manwell, when you take your foot off the gas the power stops driving the car.

With the auto the clutches are still spinning and the box is till delivering power for a second or so after getting off the gas, they carry a bit more inertia so it'll keep on slipping..................

then it'll grip like hell n smash your head through the door window :D if you've over cooked it

You have a bit more control with a manual as to when and how the power comes on, the autobox tries its hardest to smooth the ride.

They're both good either way. Ive really enjoyed the auto but im changing it for more of a challenging drive ;) imho

I know im gonna miss the auto......but I cant resist the manual box on an auto motor ;)

Dave,

Did 8.59 at the ring in my TT auto running 1 bar and the usual mods. My racelogic traction control helps iron out the autos quirks ;)

I love the auto but thats because my other toys are all manwell not sure I'd feel the same if it was my only sports car.

Autobox went bang and lots have or are about to (think 60,000miles). this is because the design was at the time at the cutting edge of what could be achieved. manwell conversion is about the same cost as a re-conned box so take your choice.

Chris

I drive an auto, my last was an auto and i use it mainly day to day.

It cruises round like a jaguar most of the time then you flick overdrive off, power on and it holds the power around the 3k mark so you have instant power. the torque convertor locks and it drives like a manual, a quick blip to your foot kicks down and it's extremely quick in this mode.

Then you switch it off and it turns into a nice comfortable cruiser.

PLUS the auto never drops its boost between gears, excellent for drag racing. I was getting 0.6, 0.5, 0.3 reaction time in mine at the pod last year :D

autos are fine until it blows up ;)

Gotta say I agree BUT! aint that the same with anything on a perfomance car? Manuals do seem to be regarded as the stronger of the two.

aaah, didnt know that. mine is a uk and i dont have power or hold :(

All sounds very interesting. Not into the drift scene so no worries there. I just like to drive quickly and smoothly on country back roads and reasonably tight twisty roads, when traffic allows of course. I am also booked up for my next Ring trip and think it would be a nicer drive in something like a big Zed, and then have some fun when I get there. I actually already have two race cars, (well one I suppose as the other is too valauble to crash now!) for balls out manual sidways thrashing, so I suppose the Auto could be more of a GT cruiser type of car as mentioned?

However I will keep looking for a manual car first of, then go for a Auto if nothing turns up of interest. I have posted a wanted advert on this forum if anyone wants to tempt me?

I still wonder if I woul dbe happy with a bog standad out of the box car tho??

Marc, maybe we could meet up at some point over the weekend and you could convert me to the dark side?? Woul dhave to be before or after the rugby of course.

CheeRS all

Richard,

Where is the cooler fitted on the Zed? I am guessing its just too small or is just crap design? I dont suppose you have any pictures of where and what it looks like do you? Auto box coolers are dead easy to fit normally and the good people at Mocal (Think Auto) should be able to sort me out. What about the linework, is it braided stuff or does that need swapping also?

I woul dhave thought it hotter in Japan summers than ours also? Must just be a crap design then?

Cheers

Hi Dave,

Im gonna be a bit busy this weekend but would be good to meet up. Ive also fitted a full set of Rotora slotted and drilled disks with axxis pads - best thing you can do with a zed is make it stop :D

I fitted an oil cooler to my jap 90 TT was easy but its coming off now cos going manwell ;)

Dont underestimate the auto, a manual has got to be bent through the gears to keep level with it.

Even tho they are pretty much equal speed wise etc, you just plant your foot with the auto and thats it, sit back , relaaaaax :D enjoy :p

I fitted an underdrive pulley too - that helps it pick up the revs real easy too ;)

I don't know exactly on the J-spec (mine's a UK), but I believe it is small and built into the radiator? Then there is an engine oil cooler somewhere in front of it. The UK spec has a separate, bigger 'box oil cooler. I think the conversion kit consists of a bigger engine oil cooler, so you then use the old engine oil cooler for the gearbox oil. I'm sure someone techy will correct me if I'm wrong.

It may be hotter in Japan, but they do not drive their cars as hard or over the long distances we are used to here. Hence the need for less cooling there.

Richard :smw:

The extra oil cooler on the Uk spec was put there for autobahn use IIRC. Very high speed sustained cruising.

This high speed cruising is only obtainable in dark coloured zeds tho ;)
