hi all, i currently have a skyline gts, and having seen some really nice 300zeds at a recent joint event, im interested in owning one. so one simple question, when buying a used zed what are the common problems and pits falls i should look for?

do they have any water traps and potential rust problems? engine weak points or special service needs?

ive spoken to one or tweo forum users on here before so thought id ask?

oh and a rough idea of price for good unmolested ones would be an advantage as at present i know very little about these cars

buy a good one even if you have to pay a bit more it will save you money in the long run

£3,500 is about an average price these days

Evening Simon :D

Some stock "common" faults/problems to be aware of are:

Digital clock not working

Glovebox catch broken

Worn bolsters esp. on drivers side

Leaky targa seals

Erratic Oil Pressure gauge (this is the sender unit:aftermarket gauges, both oil pressure and water temp are nice to have)

Electric aerial not retracting fully

Poor standard headlamp bulbs (uprated bulbs or HID kit are worth checking for)

Missing trim on centre console

Drivers seatbelt slow to retract

None of these are serious but can add up in ££'s to fix and if they've already been sorted could indicate a well cared for car.

I'm sure there are more things to check and the clever boys will be along soon to let you know :D :D

He was at the Dyno Day :slap:

yeah i know, i soke to him, but did he have a good look about the zeds and did he ask the right questions lol :slap:

Some other probs. to look-out for:- Prop centre bearing

Gear selection, syncro baulking on 2nd and 4th

As previous, Targa roof seals. If panels not replaced properly the seals fold over and you get a wet a*se, or some twonk has put silicon sealant around it.

Clutch, can be a big problem for single handed D.I.Y.

Water pipes/hoses, there are some awkward buggers to get at, under the inlet manifold, either side, and one little bute above the N/S turbo at the rear of the block.

Other than that, they are rapid motors and possibly a bit rarer than a Skyline in some areas.

there you go phil, i told ya

Also look for corrosion on the rear of the sill, around the wheelarch and on top of the front inner wings near to the suspension turrets. Look for smoke. Find out if any re-builds have been done. Turbo's do not usually last past 110k especially if upped boost and de-cats are present.
