Why is it that so many people get these two words confused? They mean two totally different things.

It's like getting red and read muddled up.

Even the Americans can distinguish between the two. ;) Never see this problem over on the US forum.

LOL...it's simple English though...not like a random mistake that someone occasionally makes, such as miss off an apostrophe, but it's a really really widespread problem.

Exactly...it's that easy. I can understand people getting they're/their/there confused as they actually sound identical...although, still a common and simple mistake, but the brought/bought anomaly...must be something in the British human genotype or something. lol

Another one that winds me up is where, were, wear and we're - they are always getting mixed up.

Does it matter as long as you can tell what people mean?

I think you risk alienating people if you labour the point.

Not at all, just wondering why/how so many people get this wrong. (The brought/bought anomaly that is). :)

dont really give a shit really, does anyone (apart from a few nitpickers) really care???????

You're posting on this thread, so you obviously do give a shit. :p

;)

I think people aren't that bothered.

A word can be identified by its context as well as its shape.

I don't think you often get a situation where there's genuine ambiguity / confusion.

It doesnt really bother me as such but I do think people should be able to read and right properly by the time they leave school. (I am dyslexic and still make a better job of it than many)

its the english languge  the same as "twat" could be someone who pokes fun at the way people talk or type or it could mean something nice and hairy that gives pleasure ;)

BTW, I'm going back to California in August. Love it so much over there. When are you visiting next? Christmas/New year I suppose.

Its nothing to do with spelling, grammar or typing. Its using a totally different word in the wrong place.

If you use brought instead of bought then you might as well use the word cat indstead of dog.

and if your a puff then that could mean another word....."Arse"

Mate that would be fantastic!! Good luck with that. I can only dream of living out there. Although I'm making inroads into getting transferred out to the states. Might end up in Texas at first, but beggars can't be choosers.

I had wanted to go to CA in April as there's a huge Z fest near LA...San Bernardino I think, but just can't at the moment.

For those who struggle with remembering the difference , think of the letter " r " : If you bring something today , tomorrow you will have brought it .

And there is no letter "r" in either "buy" or "bought" .

Just an idea , for those that care :) As it happens I do care about the English language, but appreciate that it`s of no importance to many .

Hey hey , let`s be careful out there .
