I don't use the railway network very much. Whilst I don't mind traveling by train, I only tend to use it to get to airports etc.

I'm off to Chicago next month and have just tried to get a price on a return ticket from Bristol to London....nothing mega, a relatively short 2hr trip.

£154 return!!! I mean that's absolutely insane. How can the rail network justify this? It's criminal! Not to mention the fact that the government and all the greeny meanies are trying to tempt all of us out of our cars and onto public transport.

I'm quite happy to use public transport....but those are NOT public prices.

/rant

PS...if anyone lives close to Heathrow and wouldn't mind me parking at/near theirs for a week, please give me a shout. :)

I've just had a look at national express and their coach fares are £38 return....not just that, but believe it or not, the coach is 5 minutes quicker to LHR from Bristol than the train is!! UK rail network is a joke.

Dont know how you got that price. Gloucester->London is £15 for me, and i'm not that far from you. Incidentally I have plenty of parking if you need and it works out cheaper mate.

Probably because it takes 30mins extra for the bus to haul its ass out of central Bristol... lol

Cheers, might just take you up on that offer.

Any flexibility in your times, what times are you searching by? You can save loads if you are flexible by and hour or so.

Need to be at LHR before about 9am on 14th March and return 19th around 11am

That before 9am's the killer there...

Bristol -> Heathrow (19.01-21.01 13th March) £13.40

Heathrow -> Bristol (11.25-13.42 19th March) £26.00

Heathrow Lodge Hotel 13th March £47 w/ free bus.

£86 all in.

Si, are you using this link for your train times?....... http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/

And are you checking all the different types of fare?

Prices start from £49 Saver RETURN!! It depends what day and time you want or need to travel. Catch one out of rush hours and they are relatively cheap, but get one in the rush hours and you pay through the nose!

Cheers....although it would cost me about £20 return in the dirty diesel and I'm sure parking would be about £40 for 5 days?

....come to think of it, I could probably leave my car at my Autie's place at Ealing. Only a 15 minute cab ride to LHR. I usually fly from Gatwick, last time I flew from LHR was about 4 years ago on a flight to Munich.

;)

My brother works away in London. He books his rail fares 2-3 months in advance, with GNER. He only pays £9.80 each way (Kings Cross-Durham, Durham-Kings Cross).

I think that's excellent value and certainly cheaper than by car.

£154 is a fookin rip off

Will I was intending on booking mine a month in advance. Will give their call centre a ring (as it's not in Mumbai anymore...lol) and will might be able to get a lower fare there.
