Putting my car back together, going very well so far.

Put my polished water pipes on today. tightening the last bolt on the lower water pipe that covers the stat. snapped the stud off about half way along!

:headvswal :headvswal :headvswal :headvswal :headvswal :headvswal :headvswal

Its now too short to bolt the water pipe on! I swore and threw a spanner at the shed! :wack:

Already spoke to slick pete who has successfuly removed a stud from an old block by using two nuts against each other.

Looking for some 12mm titainium allen bolts now to do all of them!

And stop using that 1/2" drive socket set to tighten stuff up.

Cos you'll strip the ally boss they fit into :smash:

1/2" drive socket!!! No wonder you snapped the bolt! :nono: :nono:

Try puttin a bar on the end of it to :p that'll really get the wee blighter tightened up

ps a 3/8's torque is a handy bit of kit ;)

As i said - i made a boo boo!

Easily done i dropped a spanner into the engine when it was running! dam those belts can snap in style :smash:

Next time borrow an air wrench :D . Only kidding mate. I may have one of these bolts in my garage. Do you know how long it is as mine are all in a pot. Also is it the one with the elongated head which is drilled & tapped to accept the middle cam cover bolt? Cheers - Dave.

No, its the right side stud for the bottom water pipe that houses the thermostat

Pete has the one he removed from an old engine ready for me, but i'm thinking of changing them all

3 allen bolts hold the top water pipe on, one of those is an odd shorter one on mine. 1 allen bolt and 2 studs/nuts hold the lower water pipe on.

I'm thinking of removing both the studs and getting 6 new stainless or titainium allen bolts

If you have any joy with the allen bolts, let me know, as I would be interested in doing this myself.

Why the **** would you want stronger bolts in there? You're lucky the stud sheared rather than stripping the ally thermostat housing!!! Stick with OEM bolts/studs - remove one of the other studs and take it to your local motorfactors - they'll be able to match it up for you and it'll cost less than £1 ;) Be very very very carefull when tightening those bolts into the stat housing - its very soft ally and will strip way too easily. Even 1/4" drive may be preferable on those bolts IMO...

Maybe your right andy, i already had to rethread the plenium for the balence bar.

Or maybe just a modicum of self control?

Wait.. I take that back - 1/4" drive it is for you my friend - not safe with anything bigger! ;)

glad its all back together Ed.

When I got to Eds this morning I was going to wind the stud out with a pair of lock-nuts. However there was not enought thread to wind on the second nut. So it was on to plan B. weld one nut on to the stud. I had taken my auto dim helmet as a precaution.

So time for a quick practice blob with Eds little Mig machine turned well up!!! then after removing both short rubber water hoses there was enough room to poke the mig torch in. Line it up on the stud and squeeze the trigger. Got it first time but just added a second shot to make sure. The only trouble now was getting a spanner or socket over the welded nut in a limited space. Couple of attempts and out it wound. I then left Ed to put it all back together.

Job done :)

your welcome bud old trick of the trade thats got me out of a S**T situation a few times.

Y'know, I've never managed to get those to work.. then again, last time I had a seized stud in an exhaust I ended up having to get it spark eroded out of the exhaust, it was that seized.
