Hi Paul,

I've got my car booked in for 9am with you tomorrow for a supply and fit of a new..well 2nd hand heater matrix as ive got water peeing out of the footwells etc..anyway on the way home from work tonight, i spotted steam coming out of the vents..nothing wrong with the way the car was performing etc, just steam coming out. Do you think the car will be ok to drive the 120miles(?) from Birmingham to yourselves there?

thanks

Ed

reason, to slow ;)

Hi Ed,

No, its not worth the risk, your losing too much water.

You will need to do a Water matrix bypass to be able to drive it.

At the back of the engine, behind the plenum you will see 2 thick metal pipes that come up out of the engine block and bend in a curved L shape and then join onto a rubber pipe each which go into the bulkhead. . You need to remove the ruber pipes and join the two metal pipes together with more pipe (and clips) to create a loop in the system.

Any problems, you can reach me on the Garage number till about 6:30pm or the work mobile on 07706586022, rebooking is not a problem.

Or if your stuck we could collect it. Or try and get it here on a truck ?

do a bypass mate, the 2 pipes that go into the bulkhead connect them together with a piece of 15mm copper pipe (household stuff) and top up the water and dont forgett a thick coat and scarf ;)

cheers for the info, but ive got it booked in with paul for tomorrow morning anyway - or are suggesting i do this before i travel?

thanks

Thanks Paul,

I wont be able to do the bypass in time - so do you think if i bring a bottle of water and top it up a couple of times on the way i could limp there?!

Im in Brum so you wouldn't be able to collect.

Thanks

Ed

Id rather you didnt but if your absolutely desperate then yes but beware the matrix could burst and cover your feet in very hot water at any time.

By the way we have been as far as leeds and as low as truro to just look at zeds let alone collect them. LOL

Sorry Paul, not trying to put you in an awkward position or make the descision of rme , just trying to gauge myself whether to risk it or not -

If the matrix burst, would anything happen to the engine, as in, no water and engine seizes up or is the matrix separate?

yeah the matrix is part of the engine coolant and if you ran with none in then yes the engine would be damaged. best thing to do is do the bypass and poodle down. ot will be quicker to do that then keep stopping and worrying on the way down.

Ok thanks for the help Paul, i'll go and take a look to see if i can do the bypass now. Presume im coming down, ill let you know asap if not.

thanks

Warning!!!

just read this.

When I went to fix Emero's zed for a front pipe leak I filled up the coolant system correctly, bled it etc .

When everything was OK and warm we set off for lunch at a nearby pub. Within 3 miles of leaving her house the matrix started to leak and steam up the vents. Emero turned round and we drove back 3 miles home. TOTAL 6 miles MAX.

After I did the bypass I needed OVER ONE LITRE of water to top up the system. thats 6 miles of gentle driving = lose 1L coolant

Im not one for telling anyone what to do with their car but just think carefully about what I have said. 10% loss in 6miles.

Thanks Pete,

Paul - I haven't been able to do the bypass so I think Im best to leave it tomorrow. I'll do the bypass over the weekend and maybe re-book with you for next Saturday?

Thanks for all your help.

Ed

Next Saturday will be fine. Just let us know when you are ready.
