I`ve seen a few cars on the road with black reg plates not old but new cars is this allowed because ive been wanting to put them on my car but not sure its allowed, i know you can with the older cars.

To the law.... NO, it's illegal, same as fancy writing, small plates etc. The only plates that are legal in the Uk, for UK registered vehicles are the standard letter size style and spacing.

But, it's up to you ;)

Go get yourself a 240Z or something! Then you can have black plates on a Z!

My MK 1 escort project is getting them, anything 1973 or older can have them. Same goes for musical airhorns and yes i can see a set of La Cuccarachas on the horizon ;)

Putting this on my GT40, would look rubbish with a modern yellow plate. Doubt the cops would notice on this, would just give them another excuse to pull you if you had them on a Z though.

if the cops by you are always on the look out dont bother but if they're reasonable they wont usually bother you unless its hard to read, etc. i think they look nice (on certain cars - not on suxo's, etc) and the plod by us is ok with them by the looks of things as there's a few going about. stick some pics up if you do. i might do them on mine if they look nice.
