Right, i have a 1993 Fairlady twin turbo....

Everynow and again when i put my foot down and it starts to accelerate an orange light comes on which says "power".

Is this some sort of traction control (i didnt think the Zed had TC??) or is there a problem??

It feels restrained when it does it, so it feels a bit like some electronic limiter but i'm not sure.

I have a UK manual for the car but it doesnt list anything in there about this mystery warning light...

Please help!!

It's not a warning light as in a fault.

It is to tell you that the gearbox has selected the power mode wich is a sport setting, holding each gear longer in order to accelerat quicker.

If your hesitates when this is on then it sound like you may have a gearbox or sensor problem. I'm sure someone on here will know who the most likely answers.

Good luck.

Andy

Perfectly normal mate,it's for the auto'box.

You can switch it to Power mode using the Power/Hold switch near the selector-or if you boot it,the Power mode kicks in automatically and go out when you come off the gas. ;)

ohh i see, i'll monitor it... it would make sence its only when i put my foot down. (i only picked the car up today you see!)

I couldnt tell, because it did slip a couple of times on the way back to my house (i live up a load of little lanes that get a bit wet from time to time)

That would explain all... i wonder if it explains this light in the gearbox section of the book... not read it all yet!!

Cheers for that

Not had my Zed that long it too is also an auto.

Not like I would tell anyone how to drive but I would seriously recommend driving it with the power on HOLD in the wet.

There is a switch on your auto box (prob read A/T..I think?) and when pressed back it should give an orange light (next o where you see power the come on) saying HOLD.

When the switch is in the middle it you get the POWER when you floor it. Switch forward you get the POWER constantly.

Bear in mind that my back end still kicked out whilst on hold before I got used to it.

Happy driving mate :D

Seriously matey if you're driving an auto on full power in the wet you'll end up backwards. Come close a couple of times and as Dansky says stick it in HOLD mode for the next few weeks till it warms up a bit then get used to the power otherwise you'll end up like:

Both of these are drivers who've had zed's for a while now and happened in the last month or so

Safe driving bud!

yeah. I found hold, its far better in that for out and about.

I cant understand why its forever trying to change down, twin turbo or not its still a 3.0 v6 under there, doesnt need to be forever attemping to swap cogs.

Thanks for the info, i had a bmw 323i before this, so im used to rear drive and its always slippery around where i live so i've learnt to be naturally cautious!

Im very impressed with it so far!

it's always trying to change as its a sports auto 'box. it was primarily developed to make the car go as fast as poss then they added hold and normal mode to help in day to day driving.

TBH i use mine in hold most of the time as it still has plenty of power but doesnt keep revving. feels nicer when driving normally.

i usually use normal when im in a rush to get somewhere or for stop-starting (hold mode pulls away in 2nd and can seem a bit hesitant at junctions) and power mode is for those rare times when you have enough road and skill to have a play.

i appreciate you having a 323 before but i've had one and its a different league in a Z. the main prob you get is when you're accelerating and the turbo's wind up. if it slips a little the auto 'box keeps trying to accelerate even as you lean off the throttle a little and thats what will get you in trouble.

as a rule of thumb to keep safe, in the wet if you feel ANY slip whatsoever back right off straight away.

otherwise they're a great car. even comfy for the performance you get.

enjoy!
