Did the UK SPec cars come with an electronic adjustable dampening shocks ??? IF so is it worth installing this feature in a Jap Model...

Featured Replies

Yes they did but there is no in car control for it. Not worth it as the wiring will not be there and I wouldn't like to try and work out how to add it...

Think the handbrake was more for a diagnostic check than anything else. Why would you want it stiffer when its parked? There is some debate as to whether the ECU stiffens up the rear during WOT but there's no evidence of that on the wiring diagrams...

I thought 1 click of the handbrake stiffened the shocks, or something, cant remember now.

Yep tis true - used the signal from the handbrake switch so once the handbrake light is on.....

Why would you want it stiffer when its parked? .

Well from experience, if you got a nice bird sitting next to you then of course you would want it stiffer!!

Seriously though, I got a uk Z and if you pull the hand break up on click it adjust the actuator on top of the shock to really stiffen it up... There is quiet a difference when going over speed humps with it pulled up one notch to when it's not.. Also when driving hard there is less body roll as your backend is stiff, makes for some more intersting drifting as the car isn't digging in like it would do normally.. Also on UK zed's the ride height is slightly higher and they have the HI Speed HICAS version..

Is this in an owners manual somewhere fellas? If it is i'd like to know if someone can scan a page and post it??!!

This forum never ceases to amaze me!

No it's not but the question has been posted on here many times before!! It is a diagnostic thing because of course the handbreak light will show but won't actually have the rear brakes gripping on anything... The US actually have a button called cruise and sport mode and it is just a switch that is linked to the handbrake... Easy enough to make one up yourself and install it rather than pulling up the handbrake one click... Try it if you got a uk Z over some speed humps and feel the stiffness difference!!! :D

usa cars have adjustable shocks from and rear, we only have rear adjustables.

i have had both of my J-Specs do exactly the Above too!! You can certainly feel the rear stiffening up :D

I tried this when i went out for a blast last night! I can't believe i've been without this feature for so long!

J-specs don't have adjustable shocks

He He!!! Now you know your living!!! Great init!!! :D

Nope - they are just normal shocks. JDM, Australia = no adjust, UK, Europe = rear shocks soft/firm, US all 4 shocks adjustable.

Europe specs here 034.gif

And here's the circuit diag for the soft/firm switch attachment.php?attachmentid=29622&stc=1

which - as the brighter ones amongst us will have noticed - has no actuation from anywhere except the handbrake switch / warning light.

Huh?

Does anyone anywhere have any reference at all to this feature? Why is it there? Is it mentioned in any manual? It seems really weird to go to all this trouble and then not mention it....

BTW not even Lymon knows why it's there or if there is any other speed-related way of activating the firm setting. Very odd...

thanks for the detailed info, its odd that theres no other way to actuate the firm setting other than the handbrake?!
