OK done a bit of searching on this but haven't really got the answer.

The Z has started making a whining noise when I accelerate, in all gears but really noticeable in 1st and 2nd. Whilst idling and in neutral it sounds very "rattley" but the noise stops once I put my foot on the clutch. Also after driving in third for a while on country roads (accelerating/decelerating) it sounds REALLY crap whining and rattling, but stops if I change down/up. Does this in fourth as well only really noticed in third.

After hunting around I think it's something to do with the gearbox hence the noise dissapearing with my foot on the clutch. It's defo not the engine. I've found a few other threads with similar symptoms as me and the advice has been that it's more of an annoyance than a problem, as in needs attention but not this second. Don't want to damage the car but funds are low right now so being able to wait a while would be excellent. Only drive about 60 miles a week.

And on that note, as I'm in South East London am I right to assume The Zen Garage is the closest place to me. Would a regular Mechanic be able to sort the gearbox, I have a good one but doubt he's seen a Zed in his life!

First problem I had with the car so I appreciate any help I can get.

Could be the release bearing. Does it still whine with the clutch in if the car is moving? If not then its the clutch release bearing

you shouldnt need a zed mechanic to sort this any decent old skool fix and not just replace mechanic should do be able to do this.the fundamentals of a g/box are all the same its just the gear train layout that varies.

This is the same prob mine had. It is the layshaft bearings (nice one jimmer ;))

I think the parts from Nissan total £60, but the stripdown and rebuild is a nightmare. I reckon a good gearbox specialist would do it no problem, after all a Z32 RWD gearbox is just a RWD gearbox......... :)
