After 18 years with the company I have come in tonight to find they are offering redundancy packages, for me it would work out at about £ 25,000. having been passed over for promotion a couple of times not because I'm useless but I speak my mind which it seams some companies dont like, I am so tempted to take the money and run. Trouble is the pay is pretty good even though I'v long lost interest in the job and company. What advice can anyone give please.

take it and run or you may choose to leave at a later date and then you could leave with nothing, leaving forces you into doing something about getting another job and You will realise that there is other options once you get yourself out of the rut.

Not good news bud. Only advice I can think of is see if, in the mean time, you can find another equaly well paid job. If you can, then take the money and run :D If not, then at least you know where you stand.

Best of luck either way :duffer:

Cheers boyz, @ 45 years old, kids grown up and wife earning a decent wage plus nearly mortgage free I am so tempted to take the money and take a few months off deciding what to do next. But taking that leap of faith is a bit scarry, anyone been in this position ? and what did you do ? and whatever you decided did it turn out for the best ?

As radiohead say:

"Take the money and run, take the money and run, laugh until my head falls off, is this really happening.." :D

No seriously take it mate, 25k is a good payoff and if you find a job in the meantime that's 25k for nothing short of changing your job

Excellent advise, other doors will open.........don't fear change.

On the otherhand £25k isn't that much, although it will be tax free of course. So if you reckon you can find another job then go for it !

Thanks everyone, I think I will go for it , maybe a change is for the best, cheers.

Do it mate, the scariest part is thinking about it. I have been there and I very much doubt you would regret it. Good luck.

Good advice there!

If you were thinking of moving on anyway and would have no probs getting another job then take it.

As your wife earns a decent wedge and you are nearly mortgage free then the pressure is kinda off really, isn't it. Pocket the £25k and find something else.

All the best, whatever you do......

Richard :)

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

I agree with most in here, especially with your age. The company I work for offered reduncies years about 3 years ago and have now gone through a 'change programme' which seen a lot of people wishing they took it when offered. If your company is offering reduncies they might be struggling and get rid of people down the line.

Also if you work there for another 4+ years and still offering you wouldn't be offered that much as they can offer less and just increase you pension slightly (alot cheaper for them, damn government thing) when you hit 50.

I am only 26 but work with alot of mixed age people and all of the folks around your age + wish they took the money when they could.

Same age as me mate. Take their offer, have a few weeks off and re-charge the batteries and dont forget to have a wee think about maybe going solo.

Dont know what your line of work is, but maybe something to think about ??

Good luck in whatever you decide.

Alan............

If you don't enjoy the job anymore this is an excellent opportunity to go look for something that bit more fullfilling.

I hope you find something really great that will also allow you some off time between for a small break. :)

All the best :)

My mate got laid off as his company was moving 40 minutes away and he had the option to move or take redudancy. Two months later they rang him up and offered him his old job back and he kept the £10 grand. The ones who moved got nothing.

Simple choice. Toss a coin. While the coin is in the air, if you find yourself hoping for a particular outcome then go with that decision regardless of the result of the coin toss.

Sorry to hear of redundancies though (I've been there 4 times) and wish you the best. Things usually have a way of turning out for the best anyway.

None of us can really give you advice on a matter that is so important to you and your family, we can only relate our own experiences to you and tell you what the outcome was for us - it doesn't mean the same outcome will apply to you. I think you know what you want to do so go ahead and do it and have all the luck in the world.
