Iv posted before but im still waiting for my compensation to come through (takes boody ages)....anyway iv been reading all post on this forum and researching ever since November and its killing me more and more that i cant get my Zed yet...In my quest of knowledge i got a couple of insurance quote to help me as a 20yr old student with 1yr no claims and an accident 2 yrs ago...i wanted an N/A but cannot get a quote for it, the best i got was just over £3k...(all these where online though and not specialist like Sky) the TT on the other hand is only £1800 which i shocked cos thats very cheap considering my Prelude 2.0 is that price now....

But anyway it seems i will end up getting a TT since fuel is silmilar and the only real probs with TT is turbos at 60,000m which i will buy one with all major work done....

So it just leaves me with one question i cant really find the answer...

How long does everyones wear and tare last?

1. How long does everyones tyres last...if its stock tyres or aftermarket alloys?

2. Brake Discs and Pad? How many miles? Estimate...

3. Any other usual wear and tare....

I want a Zed now.....

Oh and has anyone had an accident and got compensation for their injuries...If not to personal question how much and for what injuries did you get?

Could be a bit of a myth that one. Whilst a lot of people do replace/uprade them, for either passing oil or not holding boost, there are also lots of Zs with over 100k still on their original turbos. Just depends how the car was looked after. Few Zs on the US forums knocking on 120,000 still with the original turbos. Plenty on here with over 60k still with good original turbos.

My car's turbos after inspection had very little play in the shafts and passing no oil. Mine's done 60k. I will be upgrading them sometime though. But they still hold good boost and aren't smokey.

An NA is probably better on fuel everywhere excpet a gentle motorway journey when a TT *might* be better due to taller gearing.

But difference in the cost of owning is not that big - unless the turbos go pop.

It sounds like insurance is a big factor - get on the phone to at least five companies. It's a pain but you need an accurate figure. NAs probably aren't any cheaper to insure than TTs though. And UK TTss might be cheaper than NAs (which are all imports).

I think most insurance companies just pull a random figure out of their arse.

depends a lot on how you use/service them. turbo's CAN last over 100,000 miles or they can die at 40,000. if you're running more boost or modding it much more than an airfilter you will need to keep it in VERY good oil but that goes for any modded car.

tyres CAN last 20,000 miles but i doubt many on here will. if you drive normally on decently sticky stuff look at about 10-15k. if you're lead footed look more at

if you de-cat the car please swap the turbo's for ones with a secondry seal in the back or they will blow when used hard (smithy used to do these but i havent been on here for ages so i take it he still does).

brakes are total 5#ite at the best of times but easy use they'll last ages (disks over 50k, front pads 15k-ish. again though, hard use will see pads go within 5k (done that twice now) and disks warp after repeated abuse.

best to upgrade the brakes.

otherwise its the usual heavyweight sports car stuff like bushes, etc that will just need replacing as and when (same for most cars and the Z doesnt suffer any more than most).

couple of other things;

Z's dont usually give major probs if looked after well.

they do if not looked after well.

when somethings wrong engine wise its usually a wire/sensor/electronic piece of gubbins which is awkward to find but (reasonably) easy to fix.

if it does go bang or something major breaks it WILL cost an absolute fortune and be VERY hard to fix.

at 20 im presuming that you havent got a lot of time in powerful RWD cars? if not its worth doing a track training course (i know im not ya mom) as this will let you get used to it without finding out they bite the hard way.

they DO bite especially auto's in the wet.

once you're used to it you can tame them but you must always respect them. a skyline is much easier to drive fast if you're not used to a Z.

personally i think they're one of the best fun cars around. comfy, quiet (by sportscar standards) and all the extras but still faster than most shake your teeth out cars.

best bit is when you find someone in a newish so-called sports car (im not going to say 350Z incase people start going on) and even if you dont race them you know you have the ability to leave them.

good luck getting one.

si.

Hey Craig - I'd have to disagree with you re ownership costs being about the same (NA and TT). I do about 15k miles a year in my NA and at approx 28mpg, that's about 535 gallons of fuel. If a TT does about 14 mpg then I'd be spending another (at say £4 per gallon - haven't done the ltr to gal maths) £2k+ per year more - and that's before we take into account that with two turbos knocking hell out of all of the components, the maintenance and repair bill must be higher.

Good luck

Yer that was my other thing...130hp FFW Prelude to a 300hp RWD Zed...im not experienced so i will definately be taking so kind of safety course and and a skid control course...read on here IAM is a great course to take...but its definately a must...Iv drifted my Lude before and done it alot in large car parks sometimes 30mph drifts but thats in the wet and it difficult to drift FF cars but sure it easy to make mistakes in RWD cars.

iam is a good course to learn road risks and what you should be looking for but it wont teach you how to control it if you do go overboard. i'd highly reccomend iam but also a performance driving course to learn the car control (i'd do this 1st then you're ready for the iam).

the single biggest bit of advice is NEVER go past what you know it'll do. if you're unsure about anything (road, traction, itchy arse, etc) DO NOT take the risk. you may get away with it once or twice but sooner rather than later it WILL bite.

i take it you're 'lude is a 2.0 then? very easy car to use to its full. they drive well too. i had the 2.2 si untill last year (197bhp import with a fair few mods).

as for fuel costs, the TT CAN do 18mpg knocking about (very slowly).

you're more likely to get just over 10mpg with the turbo's spinning often.

realisticly mine do between 8-12mpg (giving it some) to 20-ish (steady motorway).

as for the bits wearing out, i've never heard of the N/A being longer lasting than the TT apart from when they're modded (most TT's are) or not serviced well (TT's will kill oil much quicker so its more important to change it and use good stuff more regularly).

TBH, if you keep a TT at N/A speeds it should last longer as its got lower compression and longer gearing (less revs per mile).

watch everyone start shouting. lol

Yep, double figures in fuel consumption doesn't happen very often for me.

I have too mcuh fun for that!

Also - I was speaking to Eileen on Sunday, her Zed is on stock turbos and has done over 120k miles!

My N/A was such a dog I ended up spending a small fortune just keeping it on the road. You just never know.

Buying a Zed is a gamble however much you think you know about cars.

on the age and powerful rear wheel drive issue, i got my TT Z on the road on my 21st birthday after owning 3 almeras. and it really is like learning to drive again, all my mate said id crash it in the 1st week ( got it in april). but as long as you dont go daft should be ok. Mines done 88k on stock turbo's running 1 bar of boost and a few other mods and it doesnt smoke and always holds peak boost. and its bloody quick. i spent 3 months looking for mine and luked at 7 different ones before i picked the one, and have never luked back.

good luck mate, let the fun begin.

danny

nearly 140 000 on my tubs and my car is still quicker than a lot of less milaege cars on here, although they are smoking slightly, and my discs are lucky to last 2000 miles as i drive luike a cock

maintained well they will last

driven hard they will cost

but the smile on your face is all worth it

Might as well get a turbo then but stay away from modding it or you'll soon end up in the world of Z debt LOL

It's a fun place to be until the Visa bill arrives each month

Well im hoping for a large amount of compensation...somewhere in the access of 20 grand but not sure yet....U used to drive my old civic hard but not stupid...then i had the crash which was someone elses fault (pulled out in front of me whilst i was doing 60) and since then iv taken things easy...iv taken my Lude to it limits like cornering and the acceleration it has but iv learnt to do it it areas i no and conditionas i no that i can handle and of course not causing or near other road users...my Lude is fun but iv got as much fun out of it as i can get....want a change...

Im sure my insurance isnt a problem...i suppose the only issue i have is the mixed opinions iv read of ecomomy...one mag stated they did 20.2mpg x 18.7 = 377 miles which for a jap supercar is excellent and this figure is what conviced me to turn to the turbo...but reading this site states differently...obviously they did this not using boost..

Here that site for everyone interest..i liked it...

But honestly i wouldnt mind the TT...

you can get over 20mpg out of a TT.

its just VERY rare you will.

cold starts, traffic, heavy right foot, what mood its in, all make a big difference.

personally i'd think you'd be lucky to see over 15mpg daily driving.

and as said it WILL go well below 10mpg if you're using it (which you wont be for most of the first 6 months if you like living).

Keano - i wasnt on about the age mate. to me i think you should be allowed to drive from when you can see out the car. its the experience i think that should be built up. as oyu found out for yourself (and you sound sensible enough) the Z's a different game altogether.

mayb we should be allowed to drive from 14 in something really slow and small (aixam 500?) then have a different test for each level of car (normal test upto 1000cc then 1.5, 2.0, etc) and make the test relative to what people will drive? (turbo's, RWD, etc)

then if we crash (and there is any blame on them) we should have to do it all again.

bet that would take some of the idiots off the road.

that leaves more room for us!

Being realistic needing turbos or any other big jobs is not the end of the world these days. It was 7 years ago when I bought my Z but thanks to the traders we have now its not gonna cost the earth as long as you dont get bitten by the modding bug and stick to sensible upgrades.

Iv just been working out a few things here...

Prelude at the mo...

0.90p (average per litre) x 55 (litres i fill up) = £49.5 (Mostly its less but extremes here)

5000 (miles per yer) / 350 (miles per tank) = 14.28 (times per year i will fill her)

£49.5 x 14.28 = £706.86 (money i spend on fuel a year)

Now for the Zed TT

0.90p (if super unleaded) x 65 (litres expected) = £68.5 (per fill)

5000 (miles per yer) / 300 (miles per tank) = 16.7 (fills a year)

£58.5 x 16.7 = 976.95 (money i estimate on fuel per year)

That not much difference between a 2.0 Lude and a V6 TT...the TT milage per tank might be less for sure but im not aways going to be using boost and i do 70% motorway driving and 30% town which is usually country roads. Does everyone agree these figures sound good..I wont be doing less than say 3miles in the Zed since i got a Bike lazy gits...So i feel thats settled my main concern...it looks like my decision is made a Zed Twin Turbo..

Yeah for sure, i didnt even look at non turbo's, nothing against them but for insurance they are all imports so are as much (for me) to insure as a TT. so fuel and repair costs aside, there was no competition. on the motorway with the cruise control on mine shocks me how economical it is (for a 3 litre tt). But like has been said, flatten the loud pedal and watch the needle drop, well worth every penny in my eyes. my Z is the single best (and biggest) purchase in my life.

i agree with you siraff on the different tests for different cars, would solve a lot of problems. and its like iv always said about women, ya cant beat experience.

Yer even though iv not driven or sat in a Zed i agree with you...its excellent value for money...i was shocked it was group 18 insurance...normally for a car of this performance its group 20 and the economy is actually really good considering....i really cannot wait...u can get the zed and save say the £15 grand difference between a zed and a new car and save it for Zed food and Mods...

5000 (miles per yer) / 300 (miles per tank) = 16.7 (fills a year)

£58.5 x 16.7 = 976.95 (money i estimate on fuel per year)

5000 (miles per yer) / 200 (miles per tank) = 25 (fills a year)

£58.5 x 25 = £1462.50 (money i estimate on fuel per year)

I know many people say they get more than this per tank, but I think its fair to say this is a much more common average miles per tank from the many threads on the subject, I know at very best and driving like a granny I get 220 per tank and mines a well serviced example with no faults.

Despite the mpg some have posted (clearly some (common) overfuelling issues going on) a stock'ish TT will typically average in the low 20's mpg mixed driving, and will do 30mpg+ steady cruising on motorway. Thrashing it everywhere will ofcourse put you closer to single figures.

The NA offers a few mpg more in everyday driving, and you tend to require a heavier right foot with the NA, and its less economical on the motorway.

Driving at speed limits in and around town I just about get 200.

Have more fun and I don't really lose that much more (strange I know). Not really botherd tho as the fun of the ride doesn't even make me think about fuel costs.

The only place I can see a difference is obviously driving on the motorway but I have never yet made 300 miles to a tank. Even at a steady 70 going to New Quay and back (1000 mile round trip).

Yep even £1400 a year isnt too bad on fuel...im a student so lets say if i cut back on alchol and work all summer that should be ok...who cares you only live once and its not like iv got mortgaes are anything like that to worry bout at my age...
