hello all,

i'm tired to argue with people in France who says i'm stupid because i'm uilding a drifting Z. They are all telling i'm loosing my money and it's waste of time.

But i don't really see the point why a Z could not be a good drifting machine?

Any idea?

Its a bit on the heavy side, but not the end of the world....main prob would be cost for parts, repairs, upgrades....in comparison to more common drift cars.

I think 'Steer from the Rear' professional drift demo team used 300ZX so they must be ok for drifting.

Google 'steer from the rear'

Most people change the engine over to the 200sx engine as it's easier to get more power for less money, also lightens the car.

Tell the doubters they are stupid and know nothing, Build the drift z and watch em all eat thier words when you slide past them sideways ;)

zeds drift well belive me and when they do they look amazing

i already spent 23000€ on my car so yes it's expensive but i did it.

Then, my car should weight around 1300kg, no more and if it's more, i will find something else to remove :D

My engine will produce like 500HP (td05-16G, 555cc and thousand other mods).

The only point may be the steering angle which i haven't modify yet.

PMSL escort cossies are 4wd FFS!! How gay!!

You can drift 4 wheel drivers though cant you.

Incidentally in fast and furious tokyo drift he spends the entire film learning how to drift in a 4wd evo. When it gets wrecked he has his final race in a rwd mustang with an s15 silvia engine in it. Surely he'd need a bit of practice though to get used to the rwd. Oh well its only a film.

I've found the Zed quite controlable for sideways action.

Only downside I can think of is, perhaps with the V6 engine layout, oil delivery to the appropriate areas might be tricky with constant sideways force, and hence engine failure more likely.

Other than that, I don't see why it's any different from any other RWD turbo job.

D.

you CAN drift 4WD's.

all you need on 4wd's like the evo, skyline, etc is a line lock to stop it sending the power to the front (or the electronic equivalent if you like your car). skyline's are RWD anyway but GTR's can send power to the front. they only do this when the back loses traction and from what i can gather the evo is very similar but has x% going to the front anyway and adjusts the bias rather than being total RWD normally. also, if you have a 4WD and its sending less to the front wheels than the back, if you turn in it will drift. thats the way its set up. most rally-inspired 4WD cars are designed to drift anyway (like in rallying).

the ones that wont usually like to drift are permanent (and unbiased) 4WD's.

the funniest i had was a long time ago when i had a subaru justy (yes, i admit it. and i liked it).

my mate had a bit of land by the side of his house and he was trying to learn how to drift so i let him have a go in my justy (it was loose gravelly dirt type stuff).

after about 5 mins i decided to tell him it was switchable 4wd and after clicking it into 2wd it worked really well.

i think we spent most of the summer just sliding about of that bit of dirt. great memories.

BTW where in wolves you from ALFO? there's a couple of silver Z's by me (and 2 of mine that never move).

ahh just posted about this in another thread. imo i dont think the zed is a drift car, its too heavy, the engine and parts arnt exactly cheap, most of the power is in the top end, which in a drift car ideally you want fast spool up and low end power.

im not slagging it off, i loved my zed and its ideal for other types of racing, but i wouldnt consider it a drift car. easiest way to judge is look at d1 and count how many zeds you see?

if its what u want to do though, go for it mate, i guess if u put a lot of thought into it u could make a reasonable drift car out of it. never let everyones elses opinion matter.

most of the power is in the top end, which in a drift car ideally you want fast spool up and low end power.

I would disagree there bud, the zed has a lot more low down power and quicker spool up becuase of the larger engine and twin turbos that a popular drifter like the small engined single turbo setup 200sx

maybe, the last 200 i owned had a gt28rs so had silly ammount of power just felt a lot quicker lower down than the zed. i guess itd just all depend how you set it up

i think the 200's spin the wheels easier in lower rev range but thats more due to set up. also the z's a fair bit heavier so it'll have more traction for a given tyre and it has more tyre too. i think the biggest limiting factors with the Z drifting are the cost of everything (usually the equivalent mod 200-Z the Z will be twice the price and after labour it may be more than that), the size/weight and the complexity when it breaks (big factor in drifting as it wrecks things quick).

i dont think people make the choice of other car on the cars merit, more on what it'll cost in time/money for the same thing. i think it could be a good drift car (low CofG, good grunt, good power spread, strong drivetrain, etc) but you can get the same (or nearly the same) from a 200 for a lot less cost.

All the drift zeds ive seen in japan are 2x2 models which is strange because the 2 seater is lighter .I guess the longer wheel base is better for more stabe drift angles without spining out .There must be loads of weight to be stripped out of a standard car . :)

yes one australian weighted his 2+2 TT at 1350kg and i removed more staff than him so i hope mine will be more like 1300kg.

For exemple the guys that win the final drifting in UK against the S14 of drift works was driving a R32 GTT which weight around 1250kg as per the owner.

But you might right, it may be more a cost question than the real ability to drift!

BTW where in wolves you from ALFO? there's a couple of silver Z's by me (and 2 of mine that never move).

In Fordhouses mate. I know there is a house near me with 2 zeds parked outside. Not you is it?

Haha! I didnt say you cant drift 4wd's, but its not excactly proper is it.

Tis all

after driving hundreds of 300s iv found them real easy to drift/sidways and very easy to bring back straight

i own a 200sx s14a and it does feel lighter when driving, balance is better however i felt more safe in a 300 going sideways than my 200, but i do love my 200 aswell :)

i think you'd be down a road that goes round in a U then? near a park? lol yours is tidy if it is. stood staring at it one night a month or 2 ago on the way from my mate's house. they are 2 of my Z's but its not my house hence why i cant really work on them. i may just do the swap in the street it gets warmer anytime soon as im having a hell of a time finding somewhere to do it.

do you want any bits off the red one once its apart? i'll be using the best bits of each car to make the good one but there will be a lot of good bits left to (hopefully) sell.

There is even a 4wd competitior in the Japanese D1 series. I should know, my good friend over there is the team's sponsor! Check him out, the drivers name is Ohosato (nickname "Gengoro"), even got some footage of him drifting at an Advan meeting at Tukuba circuit...impressive stuff!

Yeah thats the place. Cheers for the comments I've been trying to sort out the little niggles recently and slowly updating it. 99 spec rears and stillen lip front should just about finish it.

Are you down St. anns then? If so I drove down there in the zed to have a look as my mate said he saw 2 down there. Thought at the time it may have seemed strange for anyone who saw me.

I'm always interested in bits but as ever I don't really know what I need at the moment.

And those are my views on 4wd drifting (sorry).

np. i'm not down there at the mo but thats where the 2 are. its my mates (and ex) house. im on siraff@msn.com if you think of any bits you need or just want to have a natter. i might be going down st.annes a bit later to say hello.
