...5 grand from my grandad!

He left no will and his second wife sent the cheques for me, my bro and my cousin for 5k each as a token of good will.

I'm in shock, needless to say i'll write her a letter to say thank you and if she changes her mind in the next month i'll gladly give it back.

I have £18,500 of debt from uni and from helping out my ex in total so that helps me out a great deal.

So tempting to dump it all in the zed and get it spot on but to be honest i think i'd rather do the zed up with my own hard earned wonga and use this money constructively

Yep still in shock

and good thinking... sort your debts out then do the zed with your own buck! You'll feel prouder knowing you did it all on your own!! x

give me the money and i will sort your debts LOL

pmsl  i could try and increase it through playing roulette but i think i learnt my lesson last time

I have a generous Grandmother. She randomly dishes out money to me and my cousins. I got a cheque the year before last for £5,000 and she gave me a cheque last month for £500.

Makes for a happy day. :)

pmsl  and if i believed that i'd believe anything

Si, my gran's exactly the same. My other Grandad (rip) and Gran always gave us stupid amounts of money randomly.

Since my grandad died we go round for tea every saturday to see her and randomly one week she left an envelope on every plate with a cheque for 1000 in each.

She's a lovely old gal, wiley and very funny and i'll miss her if anything happened to her.

Remember the death duties if any of these generous elderly relatives 'pass over' in the next six years.

40% has to go to pay for all those who choose not to work etc!

Inheritance tax is a real cruel tax. I think it's disgusting and an easy way...and morbid one at that, for the treasury to make money from the bereaved.

Best to distribute funds as gives before you're to old to be able to do anything.

Keep the money and buy yourself something you can keep and say your Grandad bought it you!

yeah dont re-pay your loan mate its a waste.

cool nick happy for you the zed can wait but all that will happen with debts is more interest, your grandad would probably rather you sorted your debt out first

my grandad was a drunk  but he did leave me his shifting spanner when i was six and thought it would be usefull  i still remember undoing the nuts on my mams bed :wack: and that was 40 years ago (fvk me its that long ago)

Good work Nick!!! Really pleased for ya!!! Use some of it to help pay off some debt, which let's be honest who on here hasn't got a credit card, loan or mortage of some kind so your in the same boat most of us are dude, and then spend the rest on something that will make you happy!!! Maybe invest some of it into a high earning interest account which will grow nicely over a few years!!! ;)

I did think about putting it in savings but the return would never be more than the interest on the debt.

I think i'll be using 3000 to clear some debt but if i end up getting this job (which i'm supposed to find out about the beginning of this week) then i need to buy a cheap car to run day to day and use the zeds at weekends/evenings and this could help finance that rather than buying a clapped out banger and it die after a week.

Stocks and Shares ISA is a good return, max of 7k a year, i do them every year and a couple are averaging about 15-20% growth over 2 years!!

nice one Nick. that was a very generous gesture from [step] grandma. i'd feel guilty spending it on the Z, but then again im sure your grandpa would want you to enjoy the money. how about enjoy paying off your loan :)

Lend us £20 to mend the shed.

was that a quote from the poet McTeagle there? ;)
