Can anyone tell me whats happening to my zed again, its being excellent untill the last few weeks and i'm getting a few problems.

My power steering seems not to be working as it should, it seems alots stiffer than usual,

I checked the fliud level = ok

belt tension = ok

tyre pressure = ok

steering column nuckle joints = ok

When i turn on full lock , it makes a noise and the engine speed drops very slightly as it did before when working properly, so i think the pumps ok.

Whats the tubular object on the steering rack with two lots of wires coming out of it ? I undid them to check the conections and they seem ok , i then testd the steering with the un connected and the steering was the same = heavy .

Has the zed got some sort of progessive steering ? If so , could it be this at fault ? and what do i need to change to fix this ?

Any ideas very welcome on this as i seem to be working my arms out whilst driving my zed

The tubuar bit with the wires coming out of it is probably the steering control solenoid. There is an electronic box that controls the power to this solenoid to adjust the force required to steer the car. Lower speeds equals a higher voltage = easy steering. Higher speed = lower voltage = harder steering. Hope that helps

Measure the voltage on the solenoid when the cars is stationery - should be around 5 or 6 volts from memory

thanks nzniggles for your help :) , after reading this info, it sounds like its my steering control unit. But do you know where it is ?

Anyone know where the power steering control unit is situated ?

and where's the ecu ? :(

The ECU is under the passenger side floor.

Metal box about 6" square.

Has the car got UK clocks or has it got a chip behind the speedo?

If it is the latter it could be a problem with this chip.

The Z has progressive steering with the HICAS on the rear which is controlled by the ECU.

Basicaly the rear wheels steer in one direction at low speed and then the other once you go over 50 I think it is.

If there is a problem with the speed then it affects the steering as well.

Hope that makes sence. Do a search and I am sure you will find plenty of threads on this subject.

Good luck with it.

Darrell

I've no hicas on mine but it is a import with the speedo chipped , this was fitted about a year ago by a specialized zed garage.

could it be the speed sensor on the gearbox ? which is causing the steering to be stiff all the time , and no dought alot cheaper than a power steering controle unit

speedo works fine

Is the steering control unit the one with the blue multi plug left of the ecu unit under the passenger carpet ?

:( still not sorted :(

no, i dont know anyone with a conzult, i imagine they have one at the local nissan garage, but how much do they want for a diagnostic ?

I've been advised by zedworld today that its either the steering ecu or the solinoid on the rack, so ordered both,
