The subject of bigger brakes often crops up and with 350Z and GTR set ups not exactly cheap and AP,Alcon,Brembo etc etc big brake kits costing around 1.5K plus VAT, not many can afford them. So i've been looking and investigating and come up with some options, am not looking for deffo's or anything like that, just an expression of interest as to which option you would prefer. There is a development cost to me on either option and thats on the 1st kit, after being stung for a grand on the N/A headers, I just want more feedback first from you guys.

These will fit approx 90% of 17" wheels and all 18" wheels and they would be Z32 specific fitment.

 

Wilwood 6 pot caliper (radial mount) (My preference :) )

330mm x 32mm rotors

5 Kits - £1055 + vat

10 Kits - £975 + vat

 

OPTION 2

Wilwood 4 pot caliper (radial mount)

330mm x 32mm rotors

5 Kits - £1000 + vat

10 Kits - £910 + vat

 

OPTION 3

AP Racing 4 pot 5000 series caliper (radial mount) (the nicest looking one)

330mm x 32mm rotors

5 Kits - £1030 + vat

10 Kits - £940 + vat

 

Choices of brake pads like mintex, Ferodo and Porterfeild and would add about 80 quid ontop.

I would be interested paul. A couple of general questions though:

 

1. Is this fronts only? (i presume it is)

2. Are discs included? (i presume they are)

3. What is radial mount? (no fookin clue) :D

radial mount basically means that the caliper is bolted to the hub radially instead of the standard perpendicular (90˚ to the face of the disc) mounting style. i dont think it has any performance enhancing properties as such but it is supposed to stop the calipers from flexing as much which would make the initial bite better.

Hi mate,

1) yep front kit only but including lines, billet brackets, nuts bolts etc.

2) Yep 2 piece discs with anodised bells, not sure on colour choice yet

3) Joley is pretty much there but just to add,

 

A radially mounted caliper is stiffer, and is better at maintaining alignment with the disc. This means the pads stay in alignment better, making better contact with the disc and exerting less lateral force on the disc while generating less heat for a given pad pressure.

 

With traditional caliper mount points on the trailing end of the caliper, pad pressure at the leading edge of the caliper has considerable leverage to misalign the caliper in relation to the disc. Radial mounting takes care of that. Putting a mount at both the leading and trailing end of the caliper, leverage at the leading edge of the pads is reduced to a level that it becomes insignificant.

Hope all that helps, if there is enough interest in to just warrant the 5 kits, then am happy to go ahead and have it produced. The very 1st kit is 250 quid dearer which i will swallow, this is for development/setting up/design cost of the caliper mounts.

Hi bud, the Z1 kit is a Rotora kit, very nice, good quality but because of the bleeding weight costs a packet to ship over, but certainly do-able :)

Next step after doing the fronts is to do a matching rear kit, something not many of the big well known companies do, so thats plan B first. Certainly after that moving up another inch or so on the disc size can be looked at and i don't expect to cost too much extra, but that would be plan C and we only get there if plans A+B work :p

The bolts also now have the load in tension instead of shear (weaker) so the caliper has less movement (as said before)

Yes I would be interested in option 3. How does this compare to standard set up? Does this have any effect on the ABS ?

Paul, I've got the brake setup on cad from when I fitted my Wilwoods, although I fitted 310mm discs. Some of the info may be useful tho' like the bell offset, and hole centres etc.
