Is it auto? If so sounds like you have exactly the same problem as moir. From cold mine is OK...but if warm and the car has been left for a few minutes, then when you select gear revs. either drop and recover or drop and engine dies completely. I have been doing the same thing, holding revs. while selecting gear to save humiliation of stalling in a busy car park.

Middlehurst couldn't sort it or even diagnose it, so don't go there. Mine is currently with Peterborough Nissan, a guy called Bob Ford is looking at it as we speak. If I get a result I'll let you know.

Cheers Tim. Mine is auto and has just been reconditioned. I will check with the garage who did the work.

Let me know if you sort it, would appreciate any idea of what is causing this annoying problem...

Put some petrol in it!!!!!

A couple of things to check.

The idle on the auto when in park or nuetral should be around 900rpm with the airconditioning switched off.

Check the oil fluid level in the gearbox as I experienced this in my auto when the level got low.

I think there must be something that maintains the idle just as the engine is put under slight load from the gearbox; similar to the solenoid for the AC.

Those with CD's or manuals to hand may be able to comment.

You might want to do a self-diagnosis of the automatic gearbox.

As Steve says it could be that one of the many sensors/solenoids of the autobox is malfunctioning.

Procedure for selfdiagnosis (this might not work if you have an alarm):

-Make sure engine is warm

-turn engine off

-Set overdrive switch to 'on'

-Move lever to 'P'

-Ignition on (do not start engine)

-A/T light should come on for 2 seconds (if not, you have a problem with either the inhibitor switch, overdrive switch, kickdown switch or idle switch)

-Ignition off

-Lever to 'D'

-Overdrive 'off'

-Ignition on, wait 2 seconds

-Lever to '2'

-Overdrive 'on'

-Lever to '1'

-overdrive 'off'

-Depress accelerator fully and release it

-The A/T lamp should now start blinking 10 times, pauses and start blinking again

if all blinks are the same then no error has been detected.

if one blink is longer then the rest, count which blink is longer and it'll show you what is malfunctioning:

1st blink - Revolution sensor

2nd blink - Speed sensor

3rd blink - Throttle sensor

4rd blink - Shift solenoid A

5th blink - Shift solenoid B

6th blink - Overrun clutch solenoid

7th blink - Lock-up solenoid

8th blink - Fluid temperature sensor

9th blink - Engine revolution sensor

10th blink - Line pressure solenoid

Hope this helps,

Eric
