Its spose to be a 3.1ltr

With:

JE pistons

Knife edge crank

Carillo rods

Here are some pics of the crank. Not really knife edge is it?!?!

I've also measured the piston bore and its 87.4mm. Would that make it a 3.1ltr? I've had a look at the online manual but cant work out the standard piston size.

Not sure on the rods. They are still in. Wasnt planning on taking them out.

I would replace that oil pickup before putting the oilpan back on if I were you..

it looks pretty damaged

would check the oilpan also, I wouldn't be surprised if it was dented also.

A dented oilpan or damaged oilpickup can kill your freshly rebuild engine in no time, due to oil starvation

well from the pics it deffo looks like its had a new oil pump too

I fitted that in situ about a month ago!

I wasnt planning on a rebuild cause it was all spose to have been done 15k ago. I was just checking it out cause when I changed the oil pump the crank didnt look like it was spose to, knife edged.

Had to have the engine out to fix some coolant pipes, so I thought id check out wether the pistons have been done too.

Are we all happy that they are JE forged pistons, or will I have to take it all apart further to be doubly sure??!?!?!?!

Just measured the head gasket too. Its 1.2mm. Is this thicker than the stock size? I was told it was which is why theres a slight drop in compression. 150 on all 6.

definatly an uprated HG unsure on pistons, need to measure bore with accurate measurements then go from there, also your oil pickup looks in a mess :wack:

That car was sold to TonyC as a 3.1, knife edge crank, JE pistoned car. He was the owner before Royal, the guy you bought it from. Can't remember who owned it before Tony tho'.

It was, but now I have taken it apart it isnt.

I've worked it out a 2994cc. Not the stated 3100. (2960 standard)

Greg, used digital vernier caliper to measure. Obviously a bore gauge would be better, but its def 87.5mm bores.

So it looks like they are JE pistons. Perhaps there was a misunderstanding on the crank, maybe it was ground a bit to balance only.

JE pistons have "JE" on the underside of the crown. In one of the pictures on the previous page, the focus is almost perfectly on the piston crown, and you can see something that could be a logo - have a look at your original image which is hopefully higher-res to see if you've actually taken a picture of the logo!

Simon.

Ok,lets start with the history when i bought it,may help in understanding things as its now on its third owner since me,

The guy i originaly bought it from(Ian) put this engine in after his mate had wrecked the back end in shunt on his own Z,not long after getting work done to engine. The idea was to have an engine that would be reliable but with a bit more grunt,so was fitted with JE Pistons, rebore, crank edged/balanced.Ian put this engine in his Z(Rodders)(of course i had to take some of this on faith but there was no reason or gain for him to say otherwise)at same time he had the Tubbys done(you should have the reciept for that)and new HKS dump valves. The Z it came out of was in his garage with his original engine on floor that he was selling,so after i took it for a run out, checked over what i could deal was done(suffice to say it went like stink at 10psi(bleed valves at the time)and i could hear the pistons knock when cold,so was happy in what he had said and what i had seen, considering how well this Z has performed,on and off the track,3 owners since me,i think at the spec it left me, it was near bomb proof(ok oil pump went but wear and tear is normal on such items)never ever got hot(aircon removed)very very good figures at Thor(you should have print outs)and plenty of razzin since,ok there may of been as said some lost accurate info concerning work to crank but that happens. While its out stick some 555s in Rodders,it will be a mother when set up again(and maybe some bigger intercoolers.Anyways hope info helps

Tony

Tony. I think it is standard injectors, though you werent sure when it was on the rolling road due to the % they were running it.

They are brown colour injectors, not purple which 555's are I think.

Strange that your inj are brown as stock(if they are)as my SWB TT i just had has got new Purple ones, mabye becouse the engine might be a series 2,had this thing with inj before,me thinks Nissan just put any old cap colour on sometimes, would not suprise me :D

Not sure then Tony on inj's.

But its def not a 3.1 ltr engine! no knife edge crank. Not sure on rods. Dont wanna take them out. Stock are strong anyway!
