Just been caught speeding on the M11. Bastards measured from shadow under one bridge to next bridge and worked out at average of 100.1mph. Just 0.1 over enough to be banned.

My first offence and i'm going to court.

Any ways of getting away with disqualification would be grateful.

Might have to sell the beloved z.

sorry to hear hte news man. my first question would be: whats the accuracy of the equipment used to measure your speed? if the equipment has an error rating of more than 0.1% then you could safely argue that you were not going over 100mph and therefore can only be fined and not have your licience taken away. Also you could argur that your speedo said 95 mph and that you never go 100 mph because you know that you would loose your licience if caught.

hope this helps.

have a read through this from one of the speed trap sites.

you might want to ask how long they were waiting if they used a shadow to mark you (they move over time you know.... wink.gif), what distance it was over etc. to see if they know their own restrictions

also worth finding out how long the operator has been using the equipment, to judge reaction times to marked point events.

but mention this to your brief, dont go antagonising the officers... biggrin.gif

Time and distance devices

This covers a multitude of nasty pieces of kit, including some LIDAR based devices in time-distance mode. The most commonly-used time-distance device though is the all-conquering piece of über-equipment that all officers love - the VASCAR! The first thing you absolutely must be aware of is that time-distance devices are exempt from Home Office Type Approval. This means that the 1999 case where police evidence was thrown out on the grounds that the PolicePilot wasn't type-approved was won on an extreme technicality. It hasn't set a precedent, and don't expect any favours from the police or courts if you try to use this as an excuse.

So now we've cleared that up, any device which measures time and distance is covered by these guidelines. Elementary maths will tell you that speed can be calculated by dividing distance by time. Think about it - mph = miles per hour = distance (miles) in (per) time (hour). By the police's own admission, the level of accuracy required to operate something like a VASCAR unit is high, and does require a considerable amount of practice and exposure to the device.

For the police to measure your speed like this, your vehicle must be checked between two reference points. The ACPO guidelines define these as "identifiable points on or near the carriageway either permanent or temporary." This can be those white squares you've driven over so many times but never asked what they were for, the shadow from a bridge or pole, a piece of street furniture (signs etc) or any number of other things, right down to the point where a road surface changes colour. However, the police vehicle must pass between the same points as you. To do this, they can either be following you, or in the case of wanting to sit at the side of the road or on a bridge, they have to drive through these two markers first and set them in the device so it 'knows' the distance you are being measured over. As long as the two points don't move, the police can make a note of the location and if they come back to it at a later date, they can simply dial-in the distance measured last time around. So, a time-distance device can be used to check your speed in one of 5 modes:

Follow checks

They're following you. You pass point A, they start the timer. They pass point A, they set the start point. You pass point B, they stop the timer. They pass point B, they set the end point.

Being followed checks

Nearly identical to the above, but the police car is in front of you watching you in their mirrors.

Crossing check

This is a variation on the two methods above. The police sit and watch from the side of the road. As you whip across a known point, they start the timer. They then move off and as they cross the same point, set the start point. The rest is as above.

Pre-fed distance checks

They pass points A and B setting the start and end points. The device now has a distance set in it. They now park up at the side of the road and as you pass points A and B, the timer is started and stopped.

Dial-in distance

This is a variation on pre-fed distance checks where they can come back to a site that they already know the distance between the markers from an earlier session.

The minimum distance the police are allowed to use a time-distance device over, is 0.125 miles - one-eighth of a mile. Under exceptional circumstances, they're allowed to go down to 0.07 miles but only in pre-fed or dial-in distance modes where the start and end points are not shadows, and the area being checked cannot physically allow a speed above 40mph. Basically, if they really want to measure speed in this sort of confined space, they're better off using a different type of device.

Heres my hands on advise.Twice i have been caught doing over 120mph and both times i was banned for 14 days and a couple of hundered quid fines,Heres how, there is no magical method or anything just dont grovel in court!Dont let them know how much your lisence means to you, just apologise but dont grovel i mean it dont!.When i was asked my the Magastraight if there was any reason why i should not have a ban i truly said NO(you have to beleve me on this one,i was expecting a long ban so i had it in my mind it did not matter any way)

When i was in court there was all these bussnes type guys in suits who were pleading for ther lisences to be saved becourse of a sick mother ect! ect! BANG 12 month ban,6 month ban,12 month ban,as for my self a 33 year old black guy in my jeans i dont stand a chance RIGHT?.....WRONG 14 day ban no shit.

I have done this twice now and after telling my frends a few have done it as well.It seems if the court thinks it can hurt you with a long ban they will.

You must have heard of people before who have had the same 14 day ban this was how i did it i have an attitude in court anyway. The look on thouse bussnes men was a sight to behold,we were all caught on that motorway on the way to Cornwal.Thats how i did it beleve it or beleve it not mate but its true.Goodluck mate CHAS

There was a link somewhere on the site, that suggested you sell your car for £1 to a reletive, point out to the court that you have learnt your lesson and got rid of the car etc. then see what happens.

Good luck bud, I'm waiting for the post as I think I have one coming my way.

I concur .........

I was up for over the ton and also replied that there was no reason for me not to be banned.

They ummed and aahed and I swear I heard one (female) magistrate say 'ban him'!!

They decided to give me 6pts and a couple of hundred quid fine.......

In my book this was worse than a shortish (3month) ban...... another 100+ pinch severely increases the chance of a 12mth ban.

ditto on the good luck, man !!!

Dont want to be the bearer or bad news but your not 0.1 mph over the banning point youre 10.1 over its 20 mph over the limit 50 in 30, 60 in 40, and so on. Motorways its 90. best bet if it goes to court is say you need your car for work and prey for a 28 day ban and a fucking huge fine.

Are you sure it's 90? I got stopped for doing an average of 98.2mph on the M25 once and the nice policeman said that if I'd been over 100mph, I'd be facing a ban.

He also said that he knew and I knew that I'd been doing well over that (I got up to 115 or so, I think) and was lucky that I'd caught up with slower traffic and had to lift off smile.gif As it was, he let me off. biggrin.gif

Getting banned for 100.1mph would seem very harsh, unless they could show video evidence of what happened. A 0.1% error would be very easy to introduce, whether by accident or deliberately...

I'm almost deffinate i was told this before but i had it re-iterated to me by the traffic copper who tailed me fo 5 miles at 80 in motorway roadworks and out of the roadworks upto 110 he also let me off with a bollocking arter i licked his ass pipe clean! and that was when i had an astra gte cabriolet so what do i do, sell it and get something twice as fast, next time they wont catch me up!

As they need to measure over at least 1/8 mile to get an 'accurate' reading, let's assume that's what they did.

To cover the 1/8 mile, it would take:

4.4955 seconds at 100.1mph

4.5045 seconds at 99.9mph

So, the difference between a reading of 99.9 and 100.1mph is a difference in reaction time of only 9 thousandths of a second! And that's assuming they measured the distance accurately in the first place.

The 1/8 mile distance would only need to be measured incorrectly by 5.3 inches to account for the difference between 100.1mph and 99.9mph!

Going back to the first example, a time of 4.5918 seconds would result in a measured speed of 'only' 98mph. So, assuming you were actually travelling at 98mph, they would need to hit the stop button under a tenth of a second too soon for them to come up with their figure of 100.1mph.

I just can't see how they can be sure you were exceeding 100mph.

>

Sorry to hear about this bud, I got caught on the M25 and stopped on the M11 years ago in me Caprice 2.8infection for doing 101.75 mph. Got to sit in the back of the car and watch the muppet squad trying to play back my moment of illegal victory! However, the equipment kept coming up with CAL aka calibrate! Fuckers! mad.gif

So I trotted off to a gorgeous brief(female, not gay contrary to what some may think) and when I told her about the calibration thing she laughed! She said that you can throw that up in court, but guarantee the pigs will produce paper work to prove the equipment was calibrated before the car went out!!! FUCKERS!

I got £175 and 6 points for 100.9 on a bike.

I just asked the duty solicitor in the court to speak for me.

Paul

I got 3 points and £40 fine for a 99.74 5 mile average. smile.gif

100 is the magic marker most places, gloucestershire it's 95 though, so I'm forced to slow down on my way and way back from visiting mates & family in Leicestershire.

Nice police lady told me this just after I'd left Gloucestershire and about 5 miles into Mercia. smile.gif

However, old bill lady also said that if I stay at 80 I wouldn't be pulled.

Think she fancied me, who can blame her.

Once got tailed doing 125mph on the M25 for I don't know how long. I pulled into the middle lane...so did he...I get down to 65 without using any brakes and then whether he assumed that I had learned my lesson / got called out onto something far more important / was naffed off because I wouldn't please him and race I don't know but he tanked off. Fortunately. biggrin.gif

I was tailed at 50 in a 30 limit whilst i was driving a mach 2 fiesta, it was 6am and i'd been up all night and was heading to the shops to get food, I didn't get pulled over I think he was just graeful that I wasn't pottering down the road smile.gif

if they are at end of shift they generally would rather go home,

I shit a brick when i saw him, I wasn't exactly paying much attention

i got caught doing 113mph on the a55 in wales ( timmi turbo's racetrack ) LOL i got a solicitor and a letter off my uncle who was a chief of police in widnes came to court in my suit begged to keep my licence and i got 21 day ban & £300 fine + £30 court fees + £90 solicitor costs funny thing was the day b4 i was due in court i wrote my car off into a back of another car doing 80mph and had 2 go on a silly driving course or face another ban wreckless driving oh! stroll on!!!!!

Got caught a few years ago doing 114 on the M56 at 06:30, got £150.00 fine and 3 points. Must have been my lucky day

Thanks for all your replies. I was measured over 0.482 of a mile which was done in 17.3 secs.

Just wandering how much a ban puts up insurance, any ideas you unlucky people.

i got banned for 2 and a half years when i was 18 for dangerous driving x2, failing to stop at an accident, failing to report an accident and two counts of careless and inconsiderate driving. When i got my licence back i had to take the written test plus an extended re-test (one hour) I had to pay £1250 to insure a 1.2 nova TPFT. The only good thing is that now all car insurance seems possitively cheap.
