Can someone tell me if Castrol GTX Magnatec 10w40 performance range is fully synthetic?

The details on the reverse say that it synthitcally enhanced but do not say whether it is synthetic or semi-synthetic.

I'm moving across from Mobil 1 0w40 as this is very thin and keep draining from my lifters causing then to be noisy for a second or so at start up.

Steve,

Oil companies usually brag about their oil being fully

synthetic. If they can not say that then they say something

like "synthetically enhanced" instead.

"Fully synthetic" slogan sells so it would be written

with big golden letters on the front if it wasn't

a lie... :)

Steve,

I don't believe it is fully synthetic. Castrol's fully synthetic is Castrol RS which comes in two viscosity ratings - one of them is a 10W40 (or 10W50 - can't quite remember) which is what I use.

Having had a conversation with Craig this week regarding this immensely stimulating and (quite frankly life enhancing) subject, he tells me that Mobil do an oil called Mobil 1 Rally which is about the same viscosity as the thicker castrol.

A thread to add to the headlights / mats library ...

Yep, your right.

It is a semi-symthetic oil and I generally prefer to use fully synthetic so won't bother to put it in.

I've gone out and found some Mobil 1 15w/50 and it says this is excellent for high performance engines and turbo's.

Anyone else use 15w/50 who can comment on it?

Steve

I use 5/40 fully synthetic and get a top end rattle for about 1 sec when I cold start

does anyone else get this?

Paul

Paul,

I get this at the moment and am using

Mobil 1 0w/40.

This is the reason I'm changing the viscosity of the oil.

Steve

I think 10w/40 would be better than 5w/40.

I was going to put 10w/40 Castrol GTX Magnatec in mine until I found out it is only semi-synthetic.

I looked at the Castrol RS fully synthetic oil but they only had it in 0w/40 and that's the viscosity I was using with the Mobil 1.

Then I found the 15w/50 in Mobil 1 so it will be interesting to see if it reduces the top end lifter noise on start-up.

The 15w/50 is thicker especially at higher temperatures so my oil pressure should be good under all conditions.

If I were to change I'd get the Redline for sure. I'm quite convinced that it's the right stuff and several people used it to clear up the tappet noise. Viking was also running this more heavy oil, you'll have to check the web site to find out the right weight, it's quite clear which one is for the Z.

Yup, Redline made my lifter clutter disappear.

If I remember correctly, it's 10W40 that I'm using.

Thicker oil film is good for durability. To thick will hurt the spool-up though.

Pick your choice at www.redlineoil.com.

Jez, thanks for the holiday update!

I wish I was there...

Steve,

I have a Catchpan full of that stuff at home if you want it, only done about 60 miles, Might have tiny bits of compressor wheel and shaft in it tho hehe.

I tried it when my Z was in storage to see if that magnetic shit really worked. It did seem to make a slight difference on infrequent starts i must say, i would styick with mobile 1 tho for normal operation.

Z ya
