Lets start with a few facts then...

Im having one built to my spec for my SWB 300ZX.

Another couple of my Midlandz mate are joining in to add to the pool of expertise and share the costs.

The cages we are building are "street, Strip, and trackday" spec, they wont have FIA or Rac MSA approval. The only approval they will have is mine and thats because I want to feel safer on the track/strip and I also want to stiffen up the shell to give better handling and suspension geometry.I am only having a rear hoop with rear and diagonal bracing.

There will be no attempted "group buy" or anything similar. There was little response before, so Im not going near that again.

I really dont care if anyone else wants one or not. I now have(thanks to Maxsunny) a workable shape of main hoop(this is the difficult bit.) The 2+2 hoop will need to be modified for the SWB, but that has been overcome. There will be two versions of the one hoop. I also have a local production facility who has seen the main hoop and can replicate it on his fancy machine with a little help from a computer and some "angle formers". I dont doubt him as I have seen the production today of other hoop structures... hundreds of them!!!

So lets have a bit of discussion then.

Does anyone else fancy one??

If you did would you want it in kit form?? Ie a main hoop and enough straight bar to weld on the supports yourself.

Or would you want it "ready made"???

Or even "made and installed"???

And then there is the question of "bolt in" or "weld in"??

Or are you someone who doesnt really know much about this subject and need some help/advice???

Let me say one thing now. Anyone with a 2+2 who wants to reatain the use of the back seat for passengers is probably not going to be involved. Quite apart from the fact that I dont reckon its possible to do I think there is a safety issue with people sat too close to the bars in the back.I think the only way to overcome this would be to have some "removable" rear bars. That wont feature in my ideas, but perhaps in "kit form" you coud do it.

Oh yes...price...

What would you expect to pay??

Im not trying to be funny here Im just interested in your "price perception " of any of the proposals Ive outlined.

So what do you think???

Anyone???

BTW the above is just a "proposal" at the moment I dont want any money or commitment from anyone.

If anything is offered for sale it will be after its succesfully installed in mine.

Thats Ok I wasnt going to do any of that in mine either.

If you had a bolt in kit would you be up for welding the rear supports to the main hoop yourself?? Or would you just want a "ready to bolt in " cage making??

Clearly if I/we supply just a main hoop of the right shape and straight tube to weld on that will be the cheapest option.

I'm after one 6 points roll cage for my 2+2.

I leave in France, could you do something for me?

My friend is a mechanic some some welding is not a big deal.

Need also side bar on each side :)

Bubuche. I am only going to do 4 point rear section, but I guess you could add a front on to it to make a six point.Like wise door side bars. They dont feature in my plan at present.

Thanks for the feedback tho, thats all we are looking for at present.

Transport to France??? Well I MIGHT be able to "arrange" something!

I leave in France

No mate you "live" in France. :) :)

Ok I tryed to see with Cusco but they don't do for 2+2 :(

And yes I LIVE in France thank you ;)

I'm going to want one for my S13 at some point, I guess one-off custom fitting costs a fortune Pete?

About a grand for a fully welded in multi point like I'm having.

well you live in the same town as Britains premier Custom cage builder!!!, so if you pop along with yer mota. I have no doubt they would be pleased to quote you. I didnt even bother as the answer would be well out of my price range.

It would only cost you the price of some petrol to drive up to Nottingham and try the 300ZX hoop in your car. I have no idea if it would be anywhere near, but the offfer is open to you.

i'd be very intrested too Pete,i'm in the "i have no idea what i want & no nothing about them" category though, mine is also for a slicktop and wouldnt want anything i have to climb over to get in.

my slicktop when done should be over 600bhp so any rigidity is handy, lol

Paul.

Cheers for the offer Pete, I doubt it'd fit though tbh, you seen the width of them 300s?? :p

Sounds a lot then John, think I'll drop it down the priority list

Update.

I have now comissioned a small initial run of hoops. Each hoop is being made and supplied with the offcut section in the price which will be enough to make all the rear and/or diagonals I/you need.(I hope!!!)

If this is going to work out OK it will keep the price very reasonable.

I have also asked my man to make some "feet"!!! 10cmx10cm. in 3 mm plateWith four bolt holes pre- drilled. one gets welded to the end of the bar, the other is placed under the car and then the bolts sandwich the shell between them. I have ordered 8 per cage.

If you opt to weld in then under floor plates are not really neccessary(IMHO). However they are so cheap to make in bulk that I just had them all done now.

More details after production.

I'd be very interested in one for my SWB as long as i can bolt it in for the track/strip. Reason i reckon bolt would be best for me is so i can remove it if neccessary.

FURTHER UPDATE.

Good progress on this.

Firstly the spec has been increased to 50mmOD 2mm wall.

The reason for this is that the factory doing the job has now acquired some 50mm "formers". So the boss has bought some 50mm tube for me. Cost increase is minimal but both appearance AND strength is improved.

I have just had the prototype today and i must say I am well impressed.

To fit in a trimmed shell we just need a small re design which I have measured up for today.

However in my stripped out slick top it is virtually perfect.

So the prototype is mine. I have shortened the legs to suit.

Virtually no gap between car and cage. I will be doing a semi weld in job with this one and a certain other slick top TT owner in this part of the world will be having the same. Getting in from his wheelchair will be no problem. I will just shove him in!!!

However I do appreciate that most of you will be using trimmed shells so the proper production model will be made that way. I will keep the "prototype" pattern on file tho so anyone else wishing a very tight fit cage with trim removal can order one. Cost will be a little more as set up costs on the bender will need to be met each time a one off is made.

Pictures should be available soon of the cages installed in...

A. a stripped out slicktop.

B. a trimmed 2+2 targa.

Lastly ... informally we have spoken of a single hoop CHROMED. The ULTIMATE in Drift style Bling

Functional but beautiful !!

It is possible.. I know a man... who can...

Question is... Who wants one??????

I want one!

Willing to serve as a template for bolt-on/semi-bolt-on trimmed SWB Targa if needed.

Just wait patiently like a good boy then!!!! :slap:

Gonna drag this up again as i might be interested in a rear cage, bolt in type, not too intrusive, i.e.still being able to use the rear seats and not having to remove any trim.

Would like it Bling as well if poss :)

Well MickyB and myself tried a hoop in a 2+2 at his workshop. You can still use the rear seat BUT not if you added any rear bracing bars. I have painted mine silver chrome!!

Its kind of bling.

I have the hoop here with feet welded on and holes drilled to bolt it in. You are welcome to try it in your car..

PM me to discuss.

Better do a quick update here ! thanks for your interest. I must confess that once I got mine made I just put it all to one side.

However I have already sold one DIY kit and I have another couple available.

Pics are of my own cage in my SWB and of the main hoop in a 2+2.

Full kit consists of the main hoop. enough straight tube to make the rear supports (if you want them) re cut and drilled feet and HT Stainless nuts n bolts to fix in place.

It is collect only from me(Nottingham) and that will give you the opportunity to see how to cut and weld it all.

£150 for the full kit. Bit less if you only want the main hoop

Painted chrome??

Come on Pete, your slipping!!!

Hope your doing OK mate, long time, no speak. I'll give you a call when things settle here a bit.
