Has anyone experianced this problem

difficult to explain but basically my handling seems all over the place when driving straight (0-50mph ish) my car seems to wander all over the place and when I brake sometimes it will pull to the left and sometimes to the right.

the above seems more pronounced when the car is cold, I have had the HICAS system checked over and had a new rear steering arm fitted but still the problem persists !

anybody any ideas ? its really stating to bug me .

Thanks paulr

Paul, did you already check the power-steering fluid level ?

Maybe it's low on oil.

It happened to one of my previous cars and had similar effects as the ones you describe.

I had the oil changed and that solved the problem.

If it only does it under braking then have your brake pads and discs checkd out for wear and tear - if it does it without braking as well then get it checked by someone who knows the car - I always go to Nissan but Middlehursts in ST.Helens is damn good as they know Skylines and loads of 300's...

Thanks for your replies

power steering fluid O.K.

four wheel alignment was done when the steering arm was replaced

I will check the pads and discs again but they were fine when I last checked them as this was what I originally thought it could be ,Its a bummer as apart from this it runs like a dream with no other problems at all

this may be an outside shot but have you checked the camber alignment mine had the same problem it was drifting all over when i had two tyres put on the back the altered the camber and it ran perfect afterwards

I had this exact fault on mine and it was the speed sensor on the transmission. The speed sensitive power steering was relatively heavy at parking speed and so light when driving that I was wandering all over the road. It started off intermitantly but ended up constant. I had a few other effects later such as cutting out at high revs and the speedo sometimes stopped working.

I've had exactly this and it was nothing more sinister than low tyre pressures. It's particularly bad if the rears don't match each other.

And it may explain the reason why it's worse when cold as the pressures increase as the tyres warm.

How much does a replacement speed sensor cost?..my car seems to be developing the heavy steering at low speeds/light at high speeds syndrome

I think the SS was about £100.
