....but only for a week though, but I'm dreading it. Like to know it's close by and stuff.

It's going into the bodyshop to have the rear bumper lower half of front bumper, tailgate and rear spoiler painted. So, taking off the rims tonight and putting on some JDM wheels... :wack:

I'm going to prep the rear bumper and the lower half of the front bumper. Be interesting to see how quickly this rock guard effect comes off with a small rotary sander. I've hired one out for £10 for the weekend. Quite looking forward to getting the bumpers lovely and smooth. I've done a fair amount of bodywork over the time, and it's only light prep work, so confident it'll look good and be nice for the painter to work with.

Just need to find a sign makers locally to make me up some exact copy pin stripe now.

Will get some photos up tomorrow of my progress with the smoothing.

Sounds good Si.

although I actually think it looks nicer without the black stripe. Cleaner, fresher.

I like the pin stripe. Breaks the car up. I've seen them without the stripe and it doesn't look good on the pearl white ones. I still want to retain that originality about it, even though I'm changing the look of the bumpers ever so slightly.

get a nice long roll of insulating tape from the pound shop - that ought to do it!

No thanks. ;) Don't want to do things by halves. Want to try and get an exact colour match too on the stripe. I'm very picky about detail. :)

The chap who's spraying it has a lot of experience in painting with pearls, so quite confident he'll get a good finish and match.

Si I was gonna say that spraying pearls, (especially pearl whites), requires a fair amount of skill and technique, so gettting an exact match is not guaranteed, but sounds like your guy has enough experience so should be fine:)

I'm still worried, but have seen a few pearl whites Zeds that have had work done on them, not by this chap, but generally and they seem to be un-noticable in match and look great. I think if you don't know how to spray with them, then they can look terrible.

Tell me about it i been off all week and stuck in, car been in body shop having viper rear wing fitted and painted + couple of slight rust bubbles sorted out new rear wheel arch on driver side, miss the car like hell been promised it will be back today, doubtfull tho was hopeing to get to Donington tomorrow too. Hope your car turns out great mate look forward to seeing it

aah, so insulating tape wont do then?

understatement of the year goes too.......;)

It's the details that matter mate.

I know you'll keep it classy Si even though you're heading down the slippery-slope of "modding" your Zed.

;)

What years had these stripes then 'cos mine doesn't?

What I am doing now Graham is the last of the external modifications, apart from, of course the suspension upgrades which will change the stance of the car very slightly. I've done all I've wanted to as I find the Z naturally has a nice sleak shape and doesn't need big ugly bumpers and huge wings and aftermarket lights etc, Skylines can wear that sort of stuff due to the aggressive lines on the car.

I've not done a huge amount to it, what I wanted to do is just bring it slightly more up to date using OE type parts and in the process try and make it as clean and as tidy as I possibly can. :)

Yeah, that's the spoiler that was mentioned. I like the smooth tailgate, but the more I look at it, the more I think it needs something and the 99-spec rear spoiler is very much inkeeping with the lines of the car, especially from looking at it from the back end.

what you saying si

Fair play to you Si.

I'm always terrified to let any sprayer near any car as they so often don't get the colour right.

I'm sure yours will be fine though.

Actually, the viper spoiler is one of the only after market spoilers I like. There's another chap on here with a grey one...apache?? Can't think at the moment, anyway, he was one, so does SufolkZx I think. Both look good on those.

I don't mind the LED 6 pots actually. Not something I'd have, but look nice on yours and on MarkZXs.

I know exactly what you mean.

Looks stunning from that angle Graham. You going to get round to fitting the 99-spec lights? You going to lower it at all?

It's all about the colour too. Some colours can wear different things. I was originally looking for a silver one as well as a pearl white. I would have gone down a totally different route if I'd have had a silver one. Bigger wider wheels, full Stillen Type III kit, poss viper spoiler....

Yeh Si they are on the list.;)

Got to get my 350z discs on first and replace the cracked perspex strip.

It tends to lower itself when I get me lardy arse in it LOL!

My perspex strip is cracked. Was always going to replace it pre-crack anyway as it's the horrible dark red/faided one. But I've left doing it because I knew I was going to get the tailgate resprayed at some point.

Looking forward to seeing the finish job. When you get your coach lines make sure they’re 9mm matt black outdoor vinyl, that’s what I used.

  • Author

Mine aren't matt black. Mine are like a very very dark anthracite grey. I think different Zeds came with different coloured coachlines.

Yes that’s true mine were, I had that silver and black thing going on with my car that’s why I got black one’s. It shouldn’t be a problem for you but I think it will have a shinny look to it. Marc has a machine that I used to make stickers on so I know how many different types of vinyl there is.

I just have to find a company that'll get a near identical colour match to the coachline on there already. While it's in the bodyshop, I'll take some off and give it to a company I've found and will see if they can match it.

Looking at your car on there, I'm liking the black/silver theme. You going to tint out the rear lights like T-Pots? They look lovely if done properly.

I love the viper spoiler - I think it really suits the Zed. Only downside is you can see bog all out the back !!!
