Nico, with hindsight I owe you an apology for my rather blunt approach. I react quite badly when I get calls from Young ladies who are seriously worried what might happen to them and their systems.

For the benefit of everyone:

I have NEVER implied that your forum, setup or organization is in ANY way at fault or involved in any wrongdoing. Since it is on your mind I will repeat for the record:

The domain and server of 300zx.co.uk is blameless in all that happened as far as anyone can tell.

You are not and have not been under any suspicion for anything.

It is just your bad luck that you happened to be the place 300z was located. And hence the place I used to expose his stupidity in public.

You are absolutely right when you say that the forum has served its purpose here, however even you seem to have missed the REPEATEDLY STATED fact that I am not employed/retained/or acting for Xoticar in any capacity.They requested and sanctioned precisely NONE of this.... So will you all shut up about damage to Xoticar?...the damage that could and WOULD have been done to that server is very real and potentialy very expensive had it gone ahead no?

 

My only point here I guess is this - what if it was your server under attack from someone you trusted? would you be so quick to judge?

I took it upon myself to do this, mainly because I know 1st hand the worry and fear a threat of the kind posed by 300z can cause...whether or not that threat is real is IRRELEVANT..the worry and fear are real.

Yes I have notified the abuse teams involved - Impossible not to as one of them had to immediately secure the server to safeguard the Xoticar site. Secondly making it public that they were involved meant that any casual attackers reading 300z's posts would be dissuaded from trying their luck. the actions I took were in fact a great deal more considered than first appears and were designed from the begining to actually try to MINIMISE the trouble 300z is in.

Consider.. what if his attempted incitement had been sucsesful?...what if I had stayed silent and some hacker then went marching in unrestricted and brought down a few grands worth of high end server equipment?

I can tell you know, that would be REAL trouble, make no mistake, no amount of talk or anything else would stop the owners of those servers and the network they are on from steaming into 300z for everything they could get....

on the other hand abuse team members are on the whole a pragmatic bunch... beyond making sure their server is now secure they have little real interest in pusuing silly little boys and I would be suprised if any of them actualy stir themselves to act further

By making enough noise, here and elswhere I have maybe prevented any SERIOUS attack...leaving 300z with nothing worse than a kicked ego and some serious apologising to do....

You will all have your own views of the way I went about this and that is your own affair, I dont really care WHAT you think - its only important that you DO think! We have seen all to clearly what happens when people dont after all.

If I was being bloody minded, or was just the trouble causing geek some seem to think remember....I COULD have cross posted this stuff here there and everywhere for reaction but I did not. I could have revealed a great deal more about 300z in public but I did not.

I could have stayed quiet and let people attack the server willy nilly but I did not. I could have gone off a mad one and really gone to town on 300z and anyone else near him, I did not.

I COULD have done many things, Instead I have replied to those of you interested enough to discuss this properly and with Nico's permission will continue to do so if posts seem to rquire a response. There is plenty of room to discuss the issues raised if any of you feel so inclined... you might want to think before posting though...I can be a bit harsh with idiots as you may have noticed.

 

If doing this meant that a few of you think I'm some kind of idiot well thats a price I'll pay. Not doing it, or something like it, would have left too many people open to attack and allowed 300z to dig himself into a hole deeper than he knew.... instead, If he can muster the courage to apolgise and sort it out then apart from a few ruffled feathers there is no lasting harm done.... 300z might disagree, though you can be sure of one thing..

you are obviously more technical than commercial, because what you fail to understand is the damage to the company that has been caused by your post.

 

yes, the technical consequences were bad, and would result in many things you said, but companies are just as fragile on their perception in the public eye, and amongst their prospective customers

You must have your work cut out being the moral/ethical and legal guardian of the net,

 

a password change and a 30 minute audit of the server should have set everything straight. Im sure most people read this forum for information on the motor viehcle known as the Nissan 300zx not for the politics brought up in a self proclaimed "hacking" newsgroup.
