Triumph TR7, I knew all the AA men on first name terms

The first and last time my TR7 broke down, it had a V8 transplant!

but the thread is about reliability, and i have had at least 10 cars since i passed my test, and my 300 was the most reliable of the lot...well kind off :p

-my carlton gsi 24v was my most reliable car i have had pug gti was worst electric problems :headvswal

My rover 220 turbo coupe (one the first off the production line). Brand new first day of ownership dumped its power steering fluid all over the road. Yelled like a mother at the sales guy and got it fixed that day drove to london for some running in / posing and at 70 was thinking sh"T this is a noisy car............why? Door mounted too low and window not fully closing

Leaked water into the boot and into passenger footwell. Vowed never to buy a new car again that day. A resolution that lasted until last year...........

My missus came home with an RX8 brochure after weeks of nagging me for a mini !

RX8 is a great quality car except for leaky rear lights (now replaced under warranty)

Chris

I've only every owned 3 - S12 Silvia's before getting my 300ZXTT

The first one I bought in the dark as a young lad and didn't see the blue smoke comming from the exhaust so the turbo was on it's way out so that had to go within 2 weeks of me buying it

The second one was a beauty but my ex missus decided she was gonna ram me off the road in her Nova 2 weeks after I had it... I was so gutted.... The car was in a pretty bad way afterwards too!

The third one I modified the Fook out of it, striped it out and probably had the fastest, lightest highest speced S12 in the UK... 338BHP and over 450 ibft of torque... She was a monster!!!

All reliable though, except for head gasket change once on my modified one!!!

The car's I've owned, listed in terms of reliability (1 being the worst, 7 the best)

1. Fiat Uno – Definitely the worst. Frequently cut out at traffic lights and rarely started first time.

2. Ford Escort – Broke down twice (needed a new battery the second time) and needed a new exhaust a week after I bought it.

3. Citroen ZX – Had this car for a month before the head gasket blew and wasn’t worth the money or the effort to repair it. Also had an oil leak.

4. Nissan Micra – The first car I was given to learn on. Had trouble starting in cold weather and had a problem with the brakes binding.

5. Ford Mondeo – My current car. Broken down once but other than this has been fine and always starts first time.

6 Honda Civic – Had any annoying rattle every time I changed gear but otherwise ok.

7. Ford Escort Van – Given to me after the Citroen died. Had it for a couple of months, never had any problems with it and it never let me down.

Well I haven't voted because I've only had 2 cars including the zed which I don't think is really enough to give an informed opinion. My previous car was a 1998 Renault Clio. Sure enough after 70,000 miles/5 years it all started to go wrong (just like one of my mates said):

- Brakes binding on.

- Crankshaft angle sensor went so car wouldn't start.

- Exhaust fell off on way home from work (no kidding, been blowing for about 5 days and was due to go into garage for replacement next day).

- Half the dashboard failed to light up if the car hadn't been driven for a few days due to condensation.

- Bits of trim snapping off left right and centre.

Only real problem reliability wise with the zed was that one of the ABS relays stuck in the ON position so the pump kept running all night and drained the battery, but that was ages ago now. Mind you, mine's unmodded so can't comment on what it would be like if I started tinkering with things.

you missed out FIAT fix it again tomorrow

But fords are the crapiest cars on the planet

I'd say Ford and Vauxhall having owned both in the past and forever having to repair them and other peoples!

(Greg you missed out Skoda and Lada) :D

Hate to say it but THE most reliable car i have even owned is without doubt my E34 5 series BMW. I call it my airport car cause you can leave it anywhere without worrying because it is very low key. (unlike the Z)

It has hammered up and down the country (once from newquay to kinloss  ) faultlessly for the last 3 years cost me less than £2,000 to buy with 60k on the clock and has only ever had oil & filters, brake pads and tyres.

Now on 150+k miles and shows no sign of ever stopping 'cept rust is starting to appear in little spots must stop going to coastal places!

I have a theory as to why it is so reliable:-

It had a full service history and one owner before who obviously loved it. :D

I have serviced it routinely every time the LEDS tell me too and guess what it has never let me down.

It was obviously designed to do what I do with it; Lovely to drive long long distances and even though its 12 years old the only thing you can hear at 90mph are the bubbles popping in your can of red bull!

If you get a car where some muppet has not stuck to the servicing schedule, let it over heat a couple of times etc. etc. you pay later. :slap:

I will change it in a couple of months more out of could do with a change than anything.

Reliable Vauxhall! Yeah seems like and oxy moron right like 'jumbo shrimp' and 'military intelligence' but................

1989 bought my first missus a brand new vauxhall bottom of the range nova she did 100,000 miles in it with no problems at all 'cept it started to rust towards the end. Again serviced it on the schedule every time so no problems great little car for what it was. Her sister bought a polo a couple of weeks after and i remember thinking I wish we'd bought that as it looked classier (remember we are talking relatively speaking here!), more solid etc. How wrong could i be it was a shed

So my approach now is get history and keep servicing to the book you will save in the long run.

trouble with our Z's is when we get them they have usually already been run by some dolt with more desire than wallet hence geoff at zedworlds wall of shame cambelts

Sure is

I have never had a major problem with my 300zx and trust Nissan to be reliable overall.

I still have more faith in my 15 year old 300zx than my 6 year old SLK or 4 year old Rav-4. When I go on holiday I nearly always take the ZX - I've just returned from Snowdonia, driving the ZX over 1000 miles in a week.

Some serious overtaking (fekking caravans, ban them!!! :slap: ), mixed with steady 70mph a-road driving / broad thrashing and it never missed a beat.

OK so I spent a small fortune in Shell's finest but who cares - after all, that's why I own a ZX.....

Richard

I have something to say............ It's better to burn out than to fade away..... :tt2:

i can honestly say my red z i had originally, never gave me fault, apart from a starter motor, and i could still push it in gear until it turned the flywheel a tooth or 2 on, then it would start :nono: :D

as i work on them for a living, i see the best and worst of them, however same as any car if there looked after and maintained they wil last for years, as your's has rich

must be red 300s that are better

My TT was uber reliable....for the 2 years I've had until a water leak..no big deal..but when combined with the crap stock water temp gauge resulted in overheating and head gasket failure.

My NA gets abused daily and has been completely reliable. In fact the only thing its needed is oil changes and a new set of front brake pads.

I had a E34 535is for many years, and have to agree it never ever let me down. Mine was'nt low key though in black with full mtec kit..etc

However it certainly was'nt cheap to maintain, the service and bills at MOT time cost a fortune and it drank more fuel than the zed.

My old Nova was a bit naff- had been cared after and garaged since bought new in 1987, I got it in 92 and had it for 7 years. Looked after it service-wise and always got anything done that needed doing, never thrashed it madly, yet it kept letting me down. Went through periods of not wanting to start, for no particular reason. Never go to the bottom of it. Head gasket went, exhaust went routinely, rust bubbled up all over the place.

Pug 306 before the Zed, for 5 years. Only the rocker cover gasket and exhaust needed replacing, and I gave it a real thrashing everywhere; handled great and never let me down. Loved it. I'll always remember a mate following me in a Chimera- we came up to a 90 degree corner, I just flicked the wheel and round I went. Took him about half a mile for him to catch up. Wish I could have afforded both that and the Zed...

  • 3 months later...

I've had a few Alfa's cos I love em but they're not the best for reliability.

Lots of silly electrical faults and had a couple of gearboxes go - although I do go through boxes on any car due to the way I drive

Most unreliable car I've ever owned is my Z after the attensions of Grass Hopper.

Have a load of fored and the only unreliable thing I've had with them is that you could never rely on it still being on the drive next morning.

Had nicked

MkII 1600 Mexico. Much more powerfull than the RS2000

MKII RS 2000 (few that was lucky)

MkIII XR3 Coppers found it 6 years later because my Lewis leathers bike jacket was still in the car (worn out to death) and he had never removed a receipt for bike tyres made out to me in the zip pocket on the sleeve.

You can't help being in touch with your female side more than others

XJS V12 good engine BAD body always bubbled around the butresses :headvswal

Blew up a beemer once ...........burnt my lips on the exhaust though!!

never had a car go wrong on me.. and as for the lotus, series 3 turbo edition with full history of services and upgraded engine components, upgraded delorto carbs, upgraded turbo etc.. and now un upgraded head and cams .. then new bushings and shocks, all done becuase i want it done, but nothing wrong with this 23 year old car.

as for the other car in the stable.. well the jurys out on that at the moment, expect pics soon.. a nice slice of italia.

well as i have been a ford man for years now until now i can definetly say fords are crap for reliability although they are cheap to fix my escort rs turbo was always dieing so was my fiesta rs turbo and even the cossie was crap for reliabilty my only ford i think was fantastic was my old xr4i v6 now that was bullet proof but they so old now and all the new motors aint even worth looking at

iv spent alot of cash trying to get a reliable fast ford aswell but it just aint possible lol

Had a fiesta bought with 40k on the clock (i'd know now it was clocked) for 2 years, engine blew up in under 10k, brakes, shocks rust through the rear arch, etc.

Cost me 2300 + 3000 in repairs then sold it for 900 quid. Bought a granada 2.9 v6, pristine with every receipt and 60k on the clock for 600, had it two weeks then promptly wrote it off

Why do they fit 165s on a 150bhp v6 when they fit 195 on the 24v v6?????
