just bought my first zed from a guy in scotland. over the moon, shes a uk twin turbo manual. when i took her for a test drive all was well and the car pulled really hard. on the long journey home wen i pulled up at traffic lights or roundabouts the car would splutter or misfire quite badly until the revs got up a bit. it seems to be worse if you accelerate from low speed in top gear. also there is a vibration through the car around 40mph but seems worse in 5th. this smooths out as the speed gets up and disapears at 60-70. the guy reckons he put a set of plugs in from the local auto discount, seems like plug beakdown at low revs?? wont know till i check them tommorrow. been drivin since 1.00 this afternoon and am off to bed. could he of put rong plugs in or does this sound like the coil pack leads or other. any help would be realy appreciated. i think the vibration is from the prop??? :D

Not being funny..... but your not sure what it is that's wrong and you still bought the car?? did you knock the guy down on price?

Neil

The vibration sounds like worn prop bearings, spluttering when stopping is quite often PCV valves need replacing.

i only paid 2300 for the car mate!! not bad for a uk spec tt with recon tubs and a pile of receipts worth 5000

the prob with missfire only occured on the way home

would the pcv valve cause engine to run rough on low revs.? seems to clear up and pull well on full throttle as the revs come up

Unfortunately there is 101 things that can cause it but PCV valves is a common one, if there is no receipts for them being done in the history you have for the car then they will probably need doing wether its causing your problem or not.

ok mate, like i say i will take the plugs out tomorrow and check and clean all connectors tomoz. hop this sorts it

what is involved in doing the pcv valves?

A good clean of all the connectors you can find usually works wonders, just be careful as many of them go brittle due to the years of heat in the engine bay.

Remove pipe, unscrew valve and replace, sounds easy till you realise you cant reach them easily the pipe has welded itself on and the valves are in way too tight.

remove pipe? which pipe lol. i dont even know where to look!

im in the process of changing my engine at the minute. will it be worth doing whilst the engine is out. what else is worth doing. pipes on back of engine?

I guess your vibration is caused by the prop, if it were bad wheel balance it would probably occur at a higher speed and be unnaffected by gear.

As for the misfire, if they are bargain basement plugs then put them in the bin and get some proper NGK's in. I would have my concerns about this, if the previous owner was a cheapskate with the plugs then what else has he cut corners on??

If that doesn't fix it then get an expert in these cars to give it the once over. There is no point in blindly replacing parts, you could end up wasting a lot of money and getting nowhere.

A good price, but what condition is it in? I have seen these cheap zeds before and not liked what I have seen.

yes deffinatly, do as much as you can while the engine is out! Such a pain in the arse to get access to a lot of things with the engine in situ. One thing I would deffinatly do while the engine is out is to bypass the throttle body water heating system. If the pipes at the back of the engine leak they are near impossible to replace with the engine in.

Erm, local auto discount?

300ZX plugs are platinum tipped, should last 50,000 miles and cost about £80 a set. I hope he hasnt put normal copper ones in.

hmm some would say (JD im looking at you :p) that copper plugs have their advantages over platinums, however the obvious disadvantage being that they will last about 5k tops.

SORTED......was only a coil lead loose. must of been chattering and givin me an intermitent spark. why she was missfiring...shes running smooth as **** now and because of this she seems to have stopped vibrating as much.....happy days. thought i had probs there. well looked through the receipts and this car has had alot done to her - hoses - belts - brakes - turbos - sevice history up to date, all nissan stamps - plenum gaskets etc etc. why he sold it to me for so little i do not know but do i care....?

goin to buy a nice set of 18" alloys today then i,ll post some pics.

the car i bought carl is red mate...

so by bypassing the throttle body water heater wat will i lose? will i lose the hot air blowers?

no, it just provides heating for the throttle bodies, to prevent them from freezing up in very cold weather. Thing is we don't get weather that cold in this country so they aren't really needed and only serve to increase the chsrge temperature.

I would also do an EGR bypass, they usually get blocked and don't work anyway. It less to go wrong and easier to remove the plenum.

old zed, how do you do an egr bypass

As i said on the phone.... Welcome to the club, fella!!!

Any vibration from cold?

 none dave. car is running perfect since sorted the coil leads out. runs perfect and feels very tight. really happy with it....still smiling....
