Yep quietly minding my own business this afternoon when the phone rings. "Its me, Ive broken down on the M1. The engine made a noise then stopped working"

Fortunately No1 daughter was only 20 miles away, so off I trundle in the Pug estate to find her. By the time I arrive a friendly and efficient new "Highways Officer " is already on the scene and has pushed the car tight in on the hard shoulder. Soon asI arrive he heads off as I assure him Leanne has RAC cover and we will get the car removed asap.

A quick look under the bonnet initially reveals nowt amiss, but turning the ignition makes a horrible noise. Second look under the bonnet reveals the cam belt tensioner lying on the engine mount! having just punched its way thru the cam cover!

So one ded Metro. Rac truck arrives within half an hour and tows the car to the nearby service area. Once again a helpful and efficient guy. RAC wont take it further as she only has "Roadside Assist" not "Home recovery". SOOOOOooo Ill be getting a trailer hired tomorrow and picking it up.

How many valves do ya reckon ave gone???

And pistons??? them tooo??

Grrrr Kidz! who would ave em!

on a metro... buy another one!

Oh yes, Dad will be shelling out whatever happens. This is the second "incident in less than a year"

Money however just doesnt appear like magic to buy cars.

I had the same happen to my mondeo, the tensioner bearing collapsed and it bent 12 of the 16 valves as the cam belt was still in one peice. The other thing is how can you be use if the valve is bent or not, as it may look ok.

it may have also damaged the valve guides.

Yep I reckon the first thing is remove the head. I have a "Rover breaker" nearby so might get away with another head??

May of course be an economic write off. Shame as it is/was a really nice little car. Late model Ascot top spec 97 on the R.

I know it wont appeal to the average 300 owner but Leanne really liked it and is now bitterly disappointed that it is fecked.

Try telling that one to MY No.1 daughter

I've lost track of the times I've done this to my Dad :D

Pete, Instead of hiring a trailer - do you want me to help you tow it? Could save you a few quid - and you've always been a star when I've needed a hand,

Put the Z engine in it! I've had a tensioner go too which resulted in several valves getting bent.

I have a mk1 golf clipper for sale if daddy is willing to buy her a convertible?!

Kind offer

Not sure if you can tow car-car on a motorway?

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! You cant. Illegal.

Thanks for the offer tho stevie.

Its back home now.

Guess I need a Haynes manual on the Metro(Rover 100) now!!

personally i dont think its economical to repair.

Ex girlfriend of mine had her cam belt go on her clio auto, done 3 valves i think didnt damage pistons but left slight marks on them where valves hit, rather than muck about taking valves out and replacing them as seats where damaged too, i got a second hand head £60 then had to have it skimmed as its alloy, new belt head set think it all cost over £150+ that was couple years ago, car still going strong but she might just been lucky.

Your prob looking at that sort of money i recon easy, might be easier to get another engine?

you deff want to change the belt as it might look ok but could of slipped and damaged the teeth
