First off hi as its Rodders (aka Marks) brother here.

I have been helping him today take a look at his engine to try to diagnose where the whirring noise he has is emanating from. He started the engine and I first used a hose in my ear to get the general area (bottom centre of the engine) then I used a screwdriver pressed upon the oil pump casting and I'm pretty sure the noise is coming from behind this bit.

Does anyone know what could be causing the oil pump to have this odd whirring noise? It is odd as it isnt there straight away, I'm guessing that it starts once the oil pressure has risen after a few seconds and is very prominent for a few mninutes and then it subsides almost completely, but it is still there in the backround just.

I have had a scout through previous posts and found someone with a similar problem, unfortunately there was no solution or conformation of what the problem was posted up. So does anyone know the reason for the pump to whir and is it the case of that a new pump needs to be fitted?

Also is it correct that we will have to drop the sump to replace the pump (if required) as I also read about this being mentioned in another post.

Thankyou in advance for any replies

Paul

you will need someone to look it over for the noise,if your hearing a noise from the pump, then it means its working, not nesaceraly faulty

you will need to lower the crossmember whilst supporting the engine to gain acsess to removing the sump, also oil return tubes from each turbo need to be removed,as does engine/gearbox brackets, as does oil cooler hoses.

however it involves removing the cambelt, front crank sprocket ,oil seal.you also need to undo the oil strainer from the oil pump 3x10mm bolts to seperate it from the block this is inside sump.

new gaskets for oil strainer, oil pump, oil return tubes, and re-seal sump is required

Sounds like a bit of a job then!

As for the noise this one is abnormal :( i'm sure the oil pump is spinning but the noise that can be heard shouldnt be there.

Greg here is a vid of the whirring noise we have taken

I think we better be sure it that the oil pump is knackered before we start this job!

Thanks for the input

On a note everthing else that can spin that can be removed has been. There are no auxilary belts and the guide plate on the bottom timing gear has been removed as we initially thought it was this, but it still makes the noise with it off which was when i used the screwdriver on the casing and nearly went deaf!

If the noise was not there before the cam belt was changed it would make more sense to check out the pullys first, maybe a new belt with new higher tension ( poss ) has pushed one of the pulley bearings over the top.

Dave, unfortunately the noise was there before the belts (cam and auxillary) were changed. The cam belt idlers have also been replaced thus eliminating them from the equation.

Oil Pump removal is looking imminent I think :(

no worky bud try again

Hmm thats odd, works fine for me???

works for me too.

for a bit it sounded like the layshaft in the gearbox, but if you have checked oil pump then perhaps it is that

as layshaft can be noisy from cold then dissapear once warm

Sounds more like something coming into contact with the lower cambelt cover. Have you taken it off and looked at the inside of the cover for signs off a pully or the belt rubbing.

I've run the engine with all the covers off etc... Just the cam belt on and it still does it.

Would the noise still be there once warm, as this noise is.

does the noise dissapear when clutch is engaged,if you get a stephascope mechanical type one,or a long thin screwdriver, place it on bellhousing and listen, also listen inside through sump.if that checks out then i suppose its possible the inner gear on the pump is damaged and making a grating sound

do you agree greg that it sounds to harsh and the pump would have seized with the noise its making.i wondered as you do if it was a bearing in the box and the noise is travelling along the crank?

the noise you have also in the video sounds like a starter stuck in.we had a lad at work who replaced a gearbox on a van but didnt transfer the dowels over to the new box.when the van started it squealed very loud for a few minutes until the pinion released from the ring gear.has the engine been out of your car and is the starter sat square on its fixings.seen zeds with the starter fixings cross threaded a few times.
