And found the magnet in the bottom covered in very small metal filings. almost like copper slip but silver. it was about the size of half a golf ball. is this normal?

sounds like a lot, but its if you have larger pieces stuck in the strainer that you should prepare for the impending death of the box. I'd start saving the pennies either way.

where is the strainer? is it the gauze thing that is in the sump. do you have to remove the cover to get to it?

The strainer is the odd shaped silver jobbie held in with 3 bolts. Take the strainer out and you'll be able to see the contents

You'll need a sump gasket and possibly a replacement strainer depending on how much crap is in there. I got mine from Mike @ MJP

you dont need a sump gasket,you can use engine gasket sealent,same as used on the engine sump,just make sure you do up in a criss cross pattern so it pulls back in flush
