?????????????????????????????

So is it just the fact that installing the cats again generates enough back pressure to stop the smoking?

dont think you have stopped them smoking, you may have just hid the fact that they are smoking with new cats

i have to agree, the cat is simply burning the oil off and converting it so you dont see any smoke.

yes to an extent if you can increase the backpreassure higher than the oil pressure in the turbo then you could stop the oil migrating the seals, but that would pretty much involve welding the exhausts shut

cats dont "convert" oil, they are there to oxidize specific gasses!

well theyl convert it to oxides of sulphur and nitrogen then.

how can you say a catalytic convertor doesnt 'convert'?

i said it doesnt convert oil!

no fair point, but i think its probably buring the oil in more ideal conditions, higher temp and extra air from the IIV's

its down to back pressure IMO, oil does not "burn" smoke free - even in the combustion chamber mixed with air & fuel at much higher temps!!

the seals in a turbo require a certain amount of back pressure to prevent the oil being drawn past.

well if the seals have gone i doubt puting the cats on will 'heal' them.

but regardless of the problem, the cats are hiding the problem

its not so much that the seals have "healed", just that the back pressure has been restored to prevent them leaking

i want to hide the problem-- mainly for the mot. apart from cats are there any boxes that would do the same..say cherrybombs?

cherry bombs have probably got the LEAST back preassure out of any silencer ive ever seen.

any other suggestions about boxes?

put the cats back in.

if back boxes generated enough back pressure to stop the seals going then there wouldnt be a problem

youd be as well taking a section of exhaust and crimping it in the vice.
