Does the engine have to come out for the turbos to be removed

My local garage just took out nearside turbo with engine in. Charged 5 hours labour, 4 hours to put new turbo back in. He said offside turbo could come out without removing engine but would cost more as they would have to remove steering components.

Cheers, Martyn

Middlehurst use to just remove the Gear box to gain access. The reason for not removing the engine is because the engine loom becomes very brittle over the years and 99 times out of a 100 will break up once disturbed.

If both turbos are coming off (which you should do as replacing one is not a good idea)

It may be quicker to pull the lump and therefore cheeper, but a new loom could be the result.

So is it "easy" to replace the turbos with the gearbox out? I'm going to be putting in a manual box soon(ish) and if it's not too bad a job, I may do the turbos at the same time.

If it's still a nightmare to do with the gearbox out, I'll probably leave it until they either fail (I'm pretty sure they're smoking a bit now) or the engine has to come out for some other reason. :headvswal

it can be done, ive done it myself twice, passenger side isnt too bad, about an hour or so to get off.

The driver side, thats a different kettle of fish, steering rack and collumn in the way, the oil filter and housing gets in the way took me 3-4 hours to get that puppy off, tho about an hour of that was swearing at it lol.

what happens if you damage the wiring loom? how would you find the fault because there is hundreds of wires. only askin as my engine is half way out and the plastic clips are all brittle and keep breaking so imagine the wires inside will be brittle too

you search for HOURS and take alll the loom apart! its a PITA job!

thankfully, ive only had this happen once in 17 in-out jobs, so maybe im lucky (touches wood quick)!

Dave I personally have only watched and past tools. The guy that did it used to work for Middlehurst and so he'd done quite a few this way and it took him about 3 1/2 hours to take both of and fit two recons. + The gearbox was off when I arrived and still to go back on when I left, but he did have problems getting the O/S oil feed back on.

Having had my engine out once and spent weeks getting it Running properly.

I bought a new loom. £300 and so easy to fit. + when you do any work on her your not worried about it breaking, because it won't.

i've just took out the passager side turbo  ,is a pain in the ass but you can do it,i've heard people they've done it so i said yep why not ,tomorrow i'll put the replacement on ....if you want to and you got the patience you can do it ...you will have to break some spaners and few fingers but is wortit ;)
