Would be quicker to take the engine out bud. Can be done, but with so much f*cking about its not worth it. You WONT find a mechanic who will try it with engine in bud. Sorry. Know its not much help or what you want to hear, but thats the reality of it.

yep tried it myself apparently it can be done but i cant figure out how the hell they manged to torque up the turbos !!!!!!!!!! plus pulling the engine is a good way to get everything else sorted thats what im gonna have to do :( loom is made up of insulation tape n solder lol

I think the labour time to replace turbos is about the same whether engine is in or out. It's advised to have the engine out as you can inspect the rest of the engine for faults and replace split hoses etc. However engine removal/refitting is about a £600 job + parts. HTH

Excellent. How long did it take you?

How did you get to the nuts at the back of the turbo?

right...it took me two evenings after work but now i know how to do it so it should take less time to put it back i hope ,i had to undo the air con pipes so i had more room to spin the 13mm rind spaner wich i had to bend ,i took the actuator off and also that small intake pipe from the turbo ,water and oil pipes ,to top oil pipe is better if you leave it on the turbo ,i could not take it off anyway i'll have to get another one ,well you have to take off anything thats in your way . The worst part is to take them two back nut...but look in the pictures and see how i've done it,also them plates on top of the nuts were a pain in the ass but i've used a screwdriver first and once the plate is bent a bit you can put that ring spaner there and hit it with the hammer .you need a lot of patience to do it but you save a lot of money . I don't know is there any difference between these turbos?see the pictures, the one on the car is with 2-1 and the replacement one is with 2-2

well done mate. you should write up a thread for storage for others to see how to do it in the future

Or start your own little business on the side doing it that way!! IMHO people would be more willing to upgrade turbos if the engine didnt need to come out (labour just makes it stupid expensive if you have to get the engine out!)

Just need to get the drivers one out and back now mate and youl have a huge cue waiting!

ok it comes out but how can u torque the bolts back up.someone correct me if i wrong but this is important!

remember the lack of room you face and torqeing nuts is almost impossible with engine in situ, its a case of ****ing tight TBH

things to remember passenger turbo is fiddly but not difficult,O/S turbo is almost impossible so just get the engine out

make sure the gasket is in place on the oil return tube bottom of turbo housing, otherwise it will leak oil very fast

whilst your there replace the small hose that goes up behind bellhousing, this is one of the most common water leaks so if it looks suspect replace

only tricky bit is getting to the 13mm nuts as you have the nut braces covering them to stop them spinning and working loose, with lack of room its tricky bending them back over the nut, just take your time and patience will surfice
