There's more to it than putting bigger tubs on to get bit more boost, you will need to up grade ecu bigger intercoolers, injectors etc. If you only want a mild higher boost level and keep engine standard it would be cheaper to replace with standard tubs a good chip and boost controller so you can adjust your boost level, stock tubs are good for up to 13psi-1bar max to be safe, thats ample

I might slightly disagree with that carl, even if there are no plans for a big power build the new t28 tubs are spooling fast and would allow an extra measure of safety without the intercooler upgrade due to the charge being cooler.

You are proberbly right in what you say i was thinking in terms of how much boost he is wanting to achieve as stock units will start to max out at around 1 bar he will still need ecu and chip up grade as stock chip will only let the t28's produce 9psi? hence it would be cheeper to buy good second hand standard tubs and boost controller with chip then everything else ie intercoolers, injectors can stay stock just a minor up grade in boost to around 14psi. Maybe im wrong?

i can no way afford to upgrade tubs/internals/intercoolers/injectors etc. but should i ever need to replace my stock tubbies (touch wood i dont) i would go for the next ones up - and tweak the boost controller up a bit more (say, 15-15.5psi) that way you are still just within the safe limits of the whole system, yet you can get away with the odd boost spike.

thats ok if you can afford couple of grand to buy em and have them fitted then have it chipped and boost controller fitted you wont get much change from 3k+ i bet? I think joely p is looking for bit more boost without to many frills replace with stock tubs chip and boost controller lot less money for same effect that stock engine will allow, unless he goes for mig tips (not good imo) get it done properly could save a lot of money in the long run

with filter and exhuast?

Been told between 340-400 on my old black one@fly. 15psi/filter/exhaust/chip.

I am really suprised theres no real defined upgrade route for the zed turbos wise. My previous car (200sx s14) had really obvious upgrade routes for the turbos/power output required yet with zeds this always seems to come up for discussion with no real route.....

horses for courses mate, the 200sx has had the nats tadgers tuned out of it in every form and is pretty much chartered territory, we in the 300zx world are the heroes marching bravely where no one has gone before.

If looking to keep stock internals, then something like a Rebuilt stock turbo with larger impellor and 360 bearings would be ideal.

Not really true....there are LOADS of upgrade paths and turbos available, its just that the majority of the Zed tuning happens in the states and its expensive compared to lesser cars and we seem to be really tight/skint in the uk LOL.

Ztech, SouthwestZ, Zen and Zworx, Smithy all offer there own turbo options. Ranging from Rebuilt upgraded stock tubs to turbos from the various big name brands - HKS, Greddy, JWT..etc

The most popular Branded turbo's tend to be (in order of size/power :

JWT Sport 500

JWT 530BB

HKS GT2530

PE1420

Greddy 16G

Greddy 18G

The stock turbo's are efficient to around 17/18psi , but you'll need bigger injectors and intercoolers if you want to go past 15psi.

Stock botteend can handle 600hp, but a hint of detonation and the pistons would melt instantly.

Forged pistons available from about £350 upwards.

Crank is capable of handling serious power and rods are forged already but both can be upgraded.

Upgraded cams available from mild to wild and should be matched to your turbo choice.

Stock exhaust manifold is a poor design and can be upgraded, provided quicker spoolup and more power.

I was actually trying for humourous response in the last one....what is exactly the compressor side of our tubs as ive heard they are hybrid t25's.Was looking at the t2871's from atp turbo's in the states

It would seem that my little hairdryers are on there merry way oot! any advice on what turbos to replace them with would be greatly appreciated... i want to keep the internals stock so no rolls royce jet engine upgrades!

though i would like to boost a wee bit more than standard!

First of all what makes you think your tubs are on their way outwhat symptems have you got?

Is the car De-catted and smoking?

Is the car running on safety boost?

i'm selling a pair of stock tubs for a mate if you need a host for a rebuild, the reserve is only a ton..

anyway, back to the post.... from past skyline experience, the difference between a stock turbo and a rebuilt one with 360 bearings and all steel internals is quite noticable...

i ran a stock turbo at 1bar for a while, and it gave me around 320 bhp with supporting mods, fuelling etc.... i put the rebuilt turbo on and after mapping, at the same 1 bar, it came out at 405bhp at Thor racing..

the stock turbo was crying enough at 1bar, the rebuilt one was efficient upto 1.3bar...

this may well give you enough extra grunt mate..

my 300 is running at 14psi, has been chipped and boost jets have been fitted, it has a filter and pipe etc and to be honest i've been told its a LOT faster then stock, it also runs a bit lumpy on tick over so we're not sure if its had anything else done to it..

i'm in halifax on saturday at a RR day, so will let you all know when i get back...

If you go for the T28's you have to have different down pipes as it's a 5 stud fitment and not a 4 as is the standard. You also need different oil feeds as they are different also. Then dependant on which T or GT 28's you go for they will shift an aweful lot more air. My GT2837RS's were pushing 10.5 psi just on waiste gate presure with boost disconected and affectively on Safety boost. So you have to have the ECU chipped anyway or you'll be and running lean etc. IMO I'd either get your own tubs refurbed or Buy a set of good second hand ones.

I have a set that came of the engine in my car. They have only done a genuine 37,000 killometers 23,000 miles as it was John Dixons engine. If you want em you can have em for £150 + your old ones so they can be PX for the new tubs on my project. They have no plat in them at all and should last at leats 45000 miles.
