I know its a common subject at the moment, but I thought it might summarise peoples experiences for the many new zed owners that are coming along.

My personal experience as many know is first a standard zed with boost jets for 4k that was an utter nightmare, autobox broke, rebuild engine, etc, etc

My second zed though was a gem. 5.5k no problems at all, lots of money already spent on new high spec engine, basically all the modding done already.

I'd now never buy a standard car. Its often considered sensible to buy a bog standard car so you know its not been trashed or had silly mods, but I think they are too old now and will often require new auto boxes, turbos, rebuild, etc.

EDIT : TO MAKE MY ANGLE CLEAR: I'm not implying that under 3.5k is a shed. I choose this amount because its what I consider the asking price for a bog standard zed in reasonable condition (NOT a shed). Cars that have upgraded turbos, autobox, and or engine rebuild generally go for more than this.

I've put the divide as 3.5k, as less than this is very very cheap for a 40k sports car that will do 175mph! by bad experience I mean had to replace a major component at expense.

Forgot to mention you can vote more than once. Also if you spent 4k a couple of years back I'd count that as a 3.5k now ie a cheap one :)

I dont think you Poll goes low enough in the present 300zx climate

I spent a lot less than your lowest price and have replaced only the exhaust

which I knew about

I've just had to spend 611 quid on my mot within 4 weeks of buying the car so i'd call it pretty major, rear suspension, hicas arms and uvj. Drives like a different car now but developed a coolant leak yesterday :headvswal :headvswal

Why did i sell my NA?

Thats the whole point though Mick. I'd say the expected price for a standard zed that hasn't had any rebuild work done, but is in reasonable condition is about 3.5k?? Whereas one that has had new turbos/autobox/rebuild will cost more (whether uprated or not). I personally always advise people to go for cars that have already had these things done. I just wonder if we are actually at this point yet or is an untouched Zed still a good proposition??

I've edited the original post to make my intentions clearer - I'm not saying 3.5k is a shed, I'm saying that 3.5k is the average price of a bog standard zed in reasonable condition. Do people agree??

Both statements you have made Royal on the two threads I can agree with

Its just the sweeping statement that ALL under a certain price are SHITTERS

that I do not agree with

Its not the fact I paid under this price either to be honest I know mine is no show car

:duffer:

The Poll is a little unfair, in that those that spent over 3.5k would more than likely have owned there car for a lot longer than those that have took advantage of silly prices lately, so although its a lot more likely a £3k banger will F*ck up, the guy who has had his £7k zed for 4 years has had the car a lot longer to experience problems,

The Holy Grail AND NOT selling

18 months ago someone would have bought this even if he had been keeping chickens in it

That is indeed a rediculous bargain - the reasons for it not selling so far are probably :

1. Location

2. No pictures in advert

3. Zed's rarely actualy sell via this forum

4. The low Price actually puts people off!

5. UK cars are a lot less desirable than they used to be

well who wants to guess what i picked, Spent more than 3.5k and replaced everything :headvswal

Fair point Dave, but I'd need a 3D poll for that! As for the zed above that hasn't sold, I can't see anyone travelling to Tealing if there arn't any pictures up. I'd travel anywhere in the country to buy a zed myself but many wont.

bantam wheres ya coolant leak?

It was the rad cap, luckily i had a spare tt rad so switched the cap and topped the system up and it seems okay now but scared the crap out of me at the filling station yesterday :D

I'm hoping this will help Royal with his thread.

I spent £2300 on my NA and spent over £2400 keeping it on the road in the first 12 months, does not include tyres, insurance, tax, fuel etc. :headvswal

I spent £5000 on my TT and so far I have had no real issues at all. Not had my MOT yet :x:

I bought the TT cos it had the right kind of mods already:

brake upgrade, suspension upgrade, exhaust, intake, alloys. I don't even have that hideous tweed!

mine cost £7k 4 years ago, prob spent the same in mods & maintenance costs.

only times it has let me down was when i first got it - PTU failed, 2 weeks ago - water pump failed

...the guy who has had his £7k zed for 4 years has had the car a lot longer to experience problems

Very true - 9½ years for me and I've only had to replace a series 1 PTU, two clutches, and general maintenance items (brakes, tyres etc..) Paid alot more than £7k though :x:

All other mods have been voluntary ;)

Same here, owned mine now for 6 years, paid £8.5k, and she's approaching 100k miles. Only had to replace things as OE parts wore out due to other modifications. If you mod a Z then OE parts will wear out quicker. Thats the way it goes !!

Had mine 2 and a bit years, spent £5k for the car (slightly over the odds at the time) and about another £3k on repairs and mods. Out of the repairs (none major per se) probably a bit over a grand combined on new clutch and 60k service.

Given I spent an initial £8k on my previous Pug 306 +repairs over 5 years, I know which one I'd go for every time! :D

Its interesting to note theres as many 'people who have spent over 3.5k and had to replace something major' as there is 'people who have spent less than 2.5k and not had to replace anything major'.

A lot more people who have spent more and not had to replace a major item, predictable I guess but I think its good to stress the fact. At least it gives people a realistic budget to go for. Although saying that , I think I'd consider getting one that was a little cheaper if it meant I had some money in reserve?

I must admit I'm surprised at how few people who have spent less have not had to replace a major item. I expected there to be a lot of people who had bought cheap and payed the price.

I thikn it's to do with how long people have owned the cars too. If they paid less 3.5K then chances are for a TT it would have been in the last 2 years and maybe they've not had major problems "yet" - not saying these cars are unreliable but you know what I mean!

Got my first Zed TT about 1year and 1/2 ago. Cost a lot less then the average price at the time which was around £4k+. A year and a bit later the engine died on me. By that time I had already spent a good £2k on bits and bobs for the car, mostly upgrades for the car.

Decided to get another Zed TT rather then rebuild, cost less then the first one, haven't had any problems with that as of yet other then two ECU error codes! It's actually running alot better then my first one and in a better condition with lots of history to it. One thing I do have to say is that the gearbox and engine where replaced before I got it.

I paid 6K for the car 2 years ago & spent about 4K on it........Now worth about the same as a NOVA.......LOL
